Senate passes bill to mandate teaching of sexual, gender-based violence in schools

The Senate has passed a bill seeking to mandate authorities of secondary schools to include lessons on how to prevent sexual and gender-based violence in their curriculum for students.

The bill was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Ibrahim Gobir, and titled “Mandatory Inclusion of Preventive Measures on Sexual and Gender Based Violence into the Curriculum of all levels of Secondary Schools in Nigeria Bill, 2023.”

It was passed at the plenary presided over by the Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, on Wednesday.

Leading debate on the bill, Mr Gobir said compulsory inclusion of the SGBV in school curriculum will expose secondary students to dangers involved in committing the act.

He also said making such mandatory would curb the rising occurrence of SGBV and will further address child protection rights and related issues such as sexual violence, rape and harassment.

“It is cost-effective, timely and sustainable. Like it is said, ‘a stitch in time saves nine.’ The bill, when enacted, will tackle the prevalent issues of the SGBV and will further address child protection rights and related issues such as sexual violence, rape and harassment.

“To reduce cases of the SGBV and its related offence, experts have mentioned that individuals, groups and systematic interventions should be implemented in schools and must include students, teachers, administrators and parents’ participation.

“This is one of the systematic approaches to tackling this issue by early intervention by catching them young with this enlightenment which will also put our children on their toes to detect the red flags and be on guard. This will also avail them the opportunity to referral pathways for reportage.

“The goal is to have at least 80 per cent of all the participating students achieving satisfactory knowledge within 12 months of the rollout to each cohort. When they learn, they will pass to their siblings, friends and generations. This is a more sustainable systematic approach to solving this problem.”

Iyabo Ojo calls out Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State over ₦‎18 million tax bill

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has taken to social media to express her dissatisfaction with the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Jide Sanwo-Olu, and the Lagos State government over an alleged tax request of ₦18 million.

Taking to Instagram, she shared documents of a personal income tax letter and voiced her frustration with the exorbitant amount demanded by the government.

In her post, Iyabo Ojo directly addressed Governor Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State government, demanding an explanation for the hefty tax bill.

She questioned the justification for such high personal income taxes and criticized the lack of transparency in the calculation process.

Referring to a previous encounter, where she had complied with the government’s request to disclose her earnings and declare her income, the actress expressed her disappointment at receiving no response.

“In the past, you asked me to come to your office, I did, you asked me to explain and declare what I earn, which I did with my tax consultant, but noooooooooooooo, you did not respond to my letter because you want me to pay you an outrageous amount that I do not have,” she expressed in her Instagram caption.

Feeling overwhelmed by the mounting financial burden imposed on her, the actress and mother of two raised concerns about the government’s lack of sensitivity to the challenges faced by individuals and businesses.

She questioned the government’s contributions to her life, stating, “What have you people ever done for me as a government? NOTHING!!! I have single-handedly raised my kids and many others, including myself, without a single penny from the government.”

This is not the first time Iyabo Ojo has publicly expressed her grievances regarding taxation in Lagos State. In 2019, she shared tax papers on Instagram, lamenting the excessive taxation that was negatively impacting her business.

She highlighted the struggle to make a profit while juggling various financial obligations, such as rent, salaries, maintenance, and multiple taxes imposed by local and state governments.

As of now, there has been no official response from Governor Sanwo-Olu or the Lagos State government regarding Ojo’s allegations and demands for an explanation.

The actress remains steadfast in her stance, ready to face any consequences that may arise from speaking out.
