Garba Shehu Explains Why Buhari Approved Hadiza Bala Usman’s Removal from NPA

Senior presidential aide Garba Shehu has shed light on why former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the sack of Hadiza Bala Usman from her position as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), despite the longstanding personal bond they shared.

Shehu explained that the decision was driven primarily by performance and governance considerations. According to him, Buhari consistently prioritized the nation’s interest, institutional efficiency, and accountability over personal relationships in public service.

The removal of Bala Usman, a close associate of the former president, was part of a broader effort to enhance operational efficiency and transparency in strategic government agencies. Shehu emphasized that while Buhari maintained a cordial personal relationship with her, his decision-making reflected a commitment to meritocracy and results-oriented leadership.

Political analysts note that the move highlights Buhari’s management style, where competence, integrity, and agency performance take precedence over personal loyalty. The action underscores the former president’s approach to strengthening oversight, improving institutional performance, and promoting accountability across key public sector institutions.

Shehu’s remarks provide insight into Buhari’s leadership philosophy, showing that even trusted associates could be replaced if their performance did not align with national development goals or the strategic objectives of government agencies like the NPA.
