General Overseer arrested over attempt to kidnap Bishop in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a General Overseer (GO) and founder of a new generation church over an alleged attempt to kidnap a fellow bishop in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was also gathered that the Police recovered three Army uniforms at residence of the GO while executing a search warrant.

Over 20 Sim cards were also recovered.

The General Overseer, simply identified as Bishop Godfrey, was arrested along with his wife, an Assistant Pastor, elders and others who are currently detained at the Ughelli Police A’ Division.

It was further learnt that the General Overseer, whose church is located in Agbarho, was traced to a hideout, where he escaped to after getting wind of the arrest of his wife and others.

When contacted, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright confirmed the report, saying that investigation was on to unravel the incident.

El-Rufai sues Kaduna Assembly over N432bn corruption indictment

The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has instituted a legal action against the State House of Assembly over the investigation of corruption and fund misappropriation in his government when he governed the State.

Recall that the State legislative body had launched a probe into how N432 billion was expended under El-Rufai.

But El-Rufai’s son, Bello, disclosed that his father has now filed a lawsuit against the assembly over investigation findings.

Bello, who made the disclosure on X, said his father filed the suit against the defamation of his character by the state assembly.

Bello wrote: “Mallam Nasir El-Rufai filed a lawsuit against the Kaduna State House of Assembly today for Defamation of his Character, amongst other spurious, unfounded allegations levelled against his person.

“I advise they start compiling legal fees to defend their lies in court.”

Recall that El-Rufai’s administration was indicted in corrupt practices to the tune of N423 billion.

On March 30th, 2024, Governor Uba Sani revealed during a town hall meeting that the state faced a substantial debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities inherited from the previous administration.

Sani had said the debt burden led to over 70% of the state’s allocation being used to service the inherited debt.

Following this, the Kaduna State House of Assembly formed an ad-hoc committee to investigate the state’s financial transactions from May 29th, 2015 to May 29, 2023.

How we arrested suspected bomber – Rivers govt

The Rivers State government has given details of how a suspected bomber who detonated an explosive device near the state-owned Presidential Hotel during a pro-police protest in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

A substance believed to be dynamite went off near the Presidential Hotel axis of the Aba expressway causing panic in the area.

Following the blast, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Adaeze Oreh, had alerted the management of both public and private medical facilities in the state on the identity of the suspect, injury signs and the need to detain him if found.

The commissioner advised them to look out for “an individual, a young man with a traumatically dismembered upper limb because this injury which was sustained will require medical attention,” notify the Commissioner for Police, Rivers State and the Rivers State Ministry of Health if such an individual presents himself at their facility.

Oreh, in another briefing, said on Tuesday night, the yet-to-be-identified suspected bomber, was rushed to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital for treatment by his friends who are now at large.

According to her, those who brought the man to the facility claimed that he was involved in a road accident but the medical personnel recognised that the injuries on the man were not in tandem with a road traffic accident, but rather resembled injuries that would have come from a blast.

She said he was taken to the theatre for immediate resuscitation because as of the time he was brought in he was semi-conscious, following which they immediately informed the state government and the police.

The commissioner, further disclosed that the suspect is now stable after receiving medical attention at the facility, adding that, “we are working with the Rivers State Police Command and so the hospital has been fully secured.

“The patient is undergoing medical treatment. He is stable and the police are doing their own part in carrying out the necessary investigations. And so in this manner, we just seek to inform the public that this is the update following the earlier incident of today in Port Harcourt.”

The police are, however, yet to confirm the development.

However, on Tuesday night, the state Commissioner for Police, Olatunji Disu, while confirming the explosion said following preliminary investigations, the suspect actually detonated the explosive device but did not link the incident to the protesters who were in support of the barricade of the 23 local government council secretariats of the state earlier the same day.

“The information we gathered was that two of the occupants of the vehicle were injured, while two others came out, put them in the vehicle and drove off,” he stated.

Lagos cobbler who assaulted policeman remanded in Ikoyi prison

The assailant, 47-year-old Oluwaseun Jacobs, a cobbler based in Ajah, has been apprehended, already been arraigned in court on a three-count charge including assault occasioning bodily harm, and conduct likely to cause breech of peace.

A cobbler based in the Lekki area of Lagos who allegedly assaulted a policeman, Oluwaseun Jacobs, has been remanded in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

Jacobs had alleged caused what the police called “bodily harm” on one of its officers on Saturday 22nd June, 2024 at Chevron Roundabout, Lekki, Lagos State.

According to the police, the Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun, expressed dismay over the incident.

The assailant, 47-year-old Oluwaseun Jacobs, a cobbler based in Ajah, has been apprehended, already been arraigned in court on a three-count charge including assault occasioning bodily harm, and conduct likely to cause breech of peace.

“The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2024 for hearing, while the suspect is currently remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending further legal proceedings. The Inspector General of Police hereby assures all officers of the NPF’s full support in situations where their rights are violated noting that the Force would not condone such embarrassing situations.”

The statement from the police quoted the IGP as emphasizing that the safety of officers is paramount “and runs pari passu with the fundamental rights of citizens, reiterating that the NPF will not tolerate any form of assault on its officers, and will ensure that those responsible face the full wrath of the law.”

It called on all citizens to respect the role of the Nigeria Police in maintaining law and order, cooperate and support the process in creating a safer and more secure society for all.

It added, “We assure the public that the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its mission to protect lives and property, and to uphold justice and the rule of law. Further updates on the case will be provided as the legal proceedings continue.”
