Ghana Police Arrest Man for Threatening to Bring Boko Haram Into Country

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man for allegedly threatening to bring the extremist group Boko Haram into Ghana, in what authorities described as a serious national security threat.

The suspect, identified as Raphael Azare Kariyama, was apprehended following intelligence-led surveillance after he reportedly made the alarming threats amid a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in Bawku, located in the Upper East Region. The area has experienced recurring tensions between rival ethnic groups, and police said Kariyama’s comments had the potential to inflame communal violence.

In an official statement, Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, said the arrest was necessary to prevent the spread of dangerous rhetoric and maintain public safety. “The suspect will be put before the court to face the full rigours of the law. Investigations are ongoing to identify any accomplices linked to this matter,” she said.

Authorities noted that the threats emerged in the wake of increased tensions following the arrest and remand of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Kusasi man involved in the Bakwu chieftaincy dispute, a long-standing conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups over traditional leadership.

The Ghana Police Service warned the public against making inciteful statements on social media or in public, particularly regarding security matters and communal disputes, saying such actions could attract severe legal consequences.

Kariyama remains in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue. The police emphasized that the action demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding national security and preventing any attempts to destabilize communities.
