Gov Alex Otti and Nnamdi Kanu
Updated: Gov Otti, Sokoto officials visit Nnamdi Kanu after terrorism conviction
A high-powered delegation led by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, accompanied by senior Sokoto State officials, on Sunday paid an unexpected visit to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
Footage from the visit showed heavy security presence around the facility, underscoring the sensitivity of the development.
Kanu was convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 21, 2025, after Justice James Omotosho found him guilty on seven terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government. He received life imprisonment on four counts, while two other counts earned him 20-year and 5-year sentences respectively. The court ruled that prosecutors had successfully made their case.

Just hours after the verdict, Kanu was moved from DSS custody in Abuja to the Sokoto Correctional Centre — a transfer that has attracted widespread criticism. His lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, described the relocation as a deliberate attempt to isolate Kanu from his family, legal team, and supporters. Kanu’s wife, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, also confirmed the move, calling it sudden and distressing.
Concerns over his health have intensified. His personal physician, Prof. M. A. C. Aghaji, in a letter to President Bola Tinubu, warned that the abrupt transfer was “medically dangerous” and could worsen Kanu’s condition.
