Gunmen kill 14 cops in Imo, Kebbi, two Kaduna varsity students

Fourteen policemen have been killed in separate attacks by gunmen on police formations in Imo and Kebbi states.

This also came with the reported killing of two more students of Greenfield University in Kaduna State.

In Imo, five police officers were gunned down when the attackers invaded and razed the Okigwe South Police Command in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area on Monday evening.

The police command located at Orieagu in Ehime Mbano Council Area covers Ehime Mbano, Ihitte Uboma and Obowo council areas of the state.

The gunmen were said to have arrived at the police command in a Hummer jeep.

On sighting the gunmen, one of the policemen on duty had reportedly opened fire on them. They were said to have returned the fire and eventually overpowered the policemen.

By the time the loud reports of gunfire had died down, five police officers were found dead and the other policeman, who was the first to shoot, was abducted.

The development came hours after gunmen attacked motorists at Orji area of Owerri, the Imo capital, with four persons left with gunshot injuries.

An Imo commissioner was also said to have been shot during the robbery attack on Sunday.

The South-East governors have directed the composition of an advisory board for Ebube Agu, the region’s security outfit as part of efforts to end insecurity in the area.

The governors announced the decision after a security meeting held in Enugu on Monday.

In Kebbi State, the police said nine of their personnel were killed by bandits in the Sakaba Local Government Area of the state.

A police spokesperson in the state, Nafi’u Abubakar,  in an interview with journalists, stated, “The DPO Sakaba, eight other policemen and two ‘yan-sa-kais’ lost their lives during a gun duel with the bandits on Sunday at about 14:30 hours.”

Bandits on Monday killed two more students of the Greenfield University in Kaduna, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, said in a statement.

He said, “On a sad note, security agencies have just reported to the Kaduna State Government the recovery of two more dead bodies of Greenfield University students, killed by  bandits today, Monday 26th April 2021.

“The retrieved corpses have been evacuated to a mortuary, and the university has been notified of the development.”
