Gunmen kill counsellor, youth leader in Ebonyi

In a tragic incident at Isu village in the Onicha local government area of Ebonyi State, suspected gunmen have killed Stanley Akpa Nweze and Arinze Joshua Ugochukwu.

Nweze served as the councilor representing Enuagu ward in the Onicha legislative council, while Ugochukwu was the coordinator for the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Onicha LGA chapter.

The attack occurred on Monday when Nweze and Ugochukwu were reportedly traveling by bike through the Amanator area of Isu community.

According to sources, they were ambushed by armed men who shot them multiple times, ensuring their deaths before fleeing the scene. Witnesses reported that the gunmen fired sporadically into the air to deter any passersby before escaping into a nearby forest.

The Isu community has seen a rise in violent incidents recently, and this tragic event underscores the ongoing security challenges in the area. Isu village, which shares borders with Enugu State and Agba community in Ishielu local government area, has been particularly affected.

Chidiebere Uzor Agwu, Chairman of Onicha local government council, expressed profound shock and sorrow at the deaths of the two prominent community members. In a statement released by his media adviser, Prince Chijioke Agwu, the chairman described the incident as a “shattering tragedy” and urged security agencies to take swift action to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.

Douglas Ochishi, Chairman of the NYCN Ebonyi state chapter, also condemned the brutal killings. He vowed that the NYCN would not rest until justice is served and called on security agencies and other relevant authorities to act quickly to capture the perpetrators.

This devastating event has left the Isu community mourning and highlights the urgent need for improved security measures to protect citizens and prevent further violence.
