Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers in Enugu Ambush, Patrol Vehicle Burnt

Unknown gunmen have killed two police officers during a deadly ambush on a police patrol team in Enugu State, deepening concerns over worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s South-East.

The attack occurred on Agbani Road, Enugu South Local Government Area, when assailants opened fire on officers attached to the Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a routine night patrol. The attackers reportedly set the patrol vehicle ablaze after the shooting and fled the scene.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the officers were rushed to a nearby hospital but were later pronounced dead. During the attack, the gunmen allegedly carted away firearms, including AK-47 rifles and ammunition, belonging to the slain officers.

Reacting to the development, the Enugu State Commissioner Of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa ordered an immediate manhunt, deploying tactical units and intelligence operatives to track down the perpetrators and recover the stolen weapons. Residents have been urged to provide credible intelligence to assist security agencies.

The latest attack is part of a growing pattern of violent assaults on security personnel in the South-East, where police stations, patrol teams, and checkpoints have increasingly come under attack in recent months. Security analysts warn that continued targeting of law enforcement could further strain public safety and internal security operations in the region.
