Lagos Govt: Ikorodu School Block That Collapsed Was Already Marked for Demolition

The Lagos State Government has confirmed that the classroom block at Odokekere High School, Ikorodu, which partially collapsed on Thursday, had already been scheduled for demolition as part of ongoing public school infrastructure upgrades.

Officials said the bungalow classroom building gave way in the evening, but fortunately, no students or staff were injured, as the pupils had already left the building. The government stressed that all students are safe and teaching will continue without disruption.

The Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), will carry out an onsite assessment to expedite the construction of a modern replacement classroom block capable of accommodating the growing student population.

Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu has ordered the immediate relocation of affected students to nearby schools to ensure continuity of learning. The administration reassured parents and residents that safety remains a top priority and emphasized that the collapse, while unfortunate, aligns with preexisting demolition plans for outdated structures.

The incident has renewed calls for sustained investment in safe and modern educational facilities across Lagos, highlighting the importance of proactive maintenance and urban school infrastructure planning.
