Hisbah arrests 25 over alleged same-sex wedding in Kano
The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 25 individuals for allegedly organizing a same-sex marriage ceremony in the Hotoro area of Kano metropolis.
Deputy Commander of the board, Mujahedeen Aminudeen, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday.
According to Aminudeen, the suspects—comprising 18 males and 7 females—were apprehended at the Fatima Event Centre along Hotoro Bypass on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
“We got a report that some people were allegedly organizing a same-sex marriage. Our personnel stormed the venue and successfully arrested 25 persons,” he said.

He disclosed that the suspects, including the groom, had travelled from various parts of the state including Sheka, Yar Gaya, and Kofar Nasarawa to attend the event.
Aminudeen warned that the board would not tolerate activities deemed immoral or contrary to the cultural and religious values of Kano State.
“We are calling on members of the public to support the board by reporting immoral activities. Hisbah will continue to raid such places that promote immorality,” he added.
The arrests have sparked fresh debate over the role of religious enforcement agencies in Nigeria and the legal framework surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in the country.
