Hoodlums Attack LP–ADC Defection Ceremony in Alimosho
Hoodlums Attack LP–ADC Defection Ceremony in Alimosho, Several Injured
Unidentified hoodlums disrupted a joint political event organized by the Labour Party (LP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, leaving several party members injured and forcing a relocation of the programme.
The gathering was meant to formally announce the defection of LP members in Alimosho to the ADC, but more than 100 hoodlums invaded the first venue at the LP office in Idumu, wielding knives, canes, and other weapons, assaulting attendees, and destroying party property including furniture and flags. Witnesses reported that some of the attackers shouted that the LP–ADC coalition was not welcome in Lagos State.

Despite the chaos, officials quickly moved the event to a second venue at the Eco Centre Event in Egbeda, but hoodlums reportedly tracked them and attempted another attack. The Alimosho LP Chairman, Mr Olaranwaju Olushola (Heritage), described the assaults as “unwarranted” and expressed concern that many Nigerians may be unable to freely express themselves ahead of the 2027 General Elections. He added that most party members sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The LP Secretary in Alimosho, Mr Moses Akujuobi, said the decision to proceed with the ceremony was informed by leadership challenges within the LP and ongoing litigations. He explained that the initial open defection ceremony was halted by police due to lack of approval, with the Area M Commander, ACP Abaniwonda, informing them that authority rested with the Commissioner of Police (CP). After informing the Department of State Services (DSS), they went ahead with a quiet ceremony, only to face attacks at both venues.
A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that officers responded to reports of the incident at the Eco Event Centre, and were able to restore order. Fortunately, no life was lost, and no one sustained serious injuries, the officer added.
The incident underscores growing concerns about political violence in Lagos State, particularly ahead of elections, and highlights the challenges political parties face in ensuring safe gatherings for campaigns, defection announcements, and voter engagement.
