Impeachment of Fubara Loses Momentum as Four Lawmakers Pull Out

Port Harcourt — Two more members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their backing for the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, raising the number of lawmakers stepping back from the process to four in 48 hours.

The latest to pull out are Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, following earlier withdrawals by Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency).

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Nwakoh and Amadi urged colleagues to suspend impeachment proceedings and allow room for dialogue. While they acknowledged possible constitutional infractions, the lawmakers cited interventions by respected state leaders and stakeholders as influencing their decision, emphasizing a preference for peaceful resolution over prolonged political conflict.

The original impeachment notice, signed by 26 lawmakers reportedly loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, was issued on January 8, citing alleged breaches of the constitution by Governor Fubara and his deputy. With the latest withdrawals, speculation has intensified that other opposition PDP lawmakers and some APC members may align with the pro-Fubara bloc to protect the administration.

Traditional rulers intervene

Amid the crisis, the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has established a nine-member committee to mediate, chaired by His Majesty (Dr) Suanu T. Y. Baridam with co-chair Eze Barr. Nwachukwu Nnam Obi. The committee includes several prominent traditional rulers, with Barrister Darlington Owiriwa serving as secretary.

In a circular, the council’s chairman, His Majesty Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, urged all factions, social media users, and the public to exercise restraint to prevent escalation and maintain public peace.

The intervention by traditional rulers is seen as a step toward de-escalating tensions and fostering dialogue between opposing factions in the state.
