Israel Reopens Gaza’s Key Rafah Border Crossing With Egypt Under Tight Restrictions
Israel has reopened the Rafah border crossing, Gaza’s main gateway to Egypt, allowing limited movement of Palestinians in and out of the besieged territory after months of closure.
The reopening, which came into effect on Monday, is being implemented under strict controls, with only a small number of people permitted to cross daily. Priority is being given to medical patients, wounded civilians and humanitarian cases, while broader civilian travel remains restricted.
Rafah is Gaza’s only border crossing not directly linked to Israel and has long served as a critical lifeline for residents seeking medical treatment, humanitarian relief and travel abroad. Its closure had deepened the humanitarian crisis in the enclave, leaving thousands stranded and cutting off access to urgent care.

Under the new arrangement, travellers are required to undergo security screening, with movement coordinated between Israeli authorities, Egypt and international monitors. Movement is being conducted on foot, with multiple checkpoints in place before reaching Egyptian territory.
Israeli officials described the reopening as part of a broader effort tied to ongoing ceasefire understandings, while stressing that the crossing would operate on a limited and closely monitored basis. Egypt, on its part, has reportedly prepared medical facilities to receive Palestinians crossing for treatment.
Despite the reopening, humanitarian groups have warned that the limited number of people allowed through Rafah falls far short of addressing the scale of need in Gaza, where access to healthcare, food and basic services remains severely constrained.
The development has been welcomed as a symbolic easing of restrictions, but uncertainty remains over how long the crossing will stay open and whether movement will expand beyond humanitarian cases.
