JAMB says it won’t extend 2023 UTME registration

Published

on

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has no intention of extending the registration period of the ongoing 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

It also said so far over 1.16 million candidates had successfully registered to participate in the examination.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said these on Saturday, during a monitoring tour of some Computer Based Test,CBT centres in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Oloyede, during the tour, visited CBT centre located at Total Child International School, Dutse, JAMB Abuja zonal office, Life Camp, Global Distance Learning Institute and Sascon International College, Abuja, in that order.

The JAMB boss, while insisting that his organisation would not extend deadline for the 2023 UTME, warned CBT centres against extortion of candidates.

It would be recalled that the sale of the 2023 UTME commenced on Saturday,
14th January, 2023, and is set to close on Tuesday, 14th February, 2023

The JAMB Registrar said, “Registration is going on well except some of these schools.

UTME is not a school based examination, it’s individual candidates and you can see what that school, Stella maris is doing, collecting N30,000 from candidates in the name of JAMB and then end up missing up the telephone number of the candidates

“So once the keep the telephone number of candidates it is unlikely that the candidates when we are contacting them if we want to make a change in their timetable, you send text to them and it will not get to them after they have graduated from the school and want to do change of course they don’t have access to it.

“And that is a way of extorting the parents and we will take adequate steps to make sure that we stop that. One of the reasons is that we will tell evey CBT center to stop doing bulk purchase of pin and bulk registration so if s center sales more than one pin to a source or collect money for more than one pin from a source then we will sanction such centre.”

He urged candidates to report cases of extortion, saying that there is a code for candidates to reach the board when they come across any case of extortion, while promising there will be a reward for such act.

FG proposes extending NYSC to two years

The Nigerian government has put forward a proposal to extend the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme from one year to two, citing the need for enhanced skills development and a boost to youth employment.

This initiative aims to expand the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, providing corps members with more hands-on skills for job creation and contributing to national growth.

The proposal was shared during a courtesy visit by the NYSC’s Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, in Abuja. A statement detailing the meeting was issued by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at the NYSC.

“You have done so well as an organisation. Let NYSC give people more opportunity to become job creators that will meet the needs of the country,” the Minister remarked.

Dr. Alausa also acknowledged the NYSC’s innovative and digitalised approach to the mobilization process, which has helped tackle certificate fraud involving foreign-trained graduates across West Africa. He commended the Scheme for resolving the issue of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) part-time graduates who earned full-time Higher National Diplomas (HND) but had previously been exempted from national service.

“Efforts are ongoing in the Ministry to digitise the verification of foreign-trained graduates of Nigerian origin,” he added, emphasizing the ongoing collaboration between the Ministry and the NYSC to advance education and national progress. Additionally, Dr. Alausa advocated for increasing the deployment of graduate teachers to rural areas to address staffing shortages in schools.

Earlier, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu reiterated the NYSC’s dedication to aligning with national reforms and policies.

“NYSC is ready to comply with policy guidelines as directed by the Federal Government. We are also trying to reform the Scheme to conform with the present national needs,” he stated.

Nafiu also called for the establishment of a comprehensive database to track Nigerian students abroad. He explained, “This would help the government and stakeholders in the education sector to have detailed records of Nigerian students abroad and eliminate fake graduates.”

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, assured continued support for the NYSC’s initiatives, stating, “We are ready to work with NYSC more effectively towards uplifting the standard of education in the country.”
