Just in: 24-hour curfew declared in Kano over violent protest, massive looting
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has declared a 24-hour curfew in the state following violence that broke out in some parts of the state resulting in vandalisation of public property and massive looting during the protest against economic hardship in the country.
A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, on Thursday, announced the curfew with immediate effect enforcement.
The action, according to the governor, was to protect lives and preserve public and private property.
Already one person was reported to have died in the state as a result of the violence on Thursday.
Part of the statement read, “The imposition of this curfew is a necessary measure to restore order and ensure the safety of our communities.
“It is paramount that we protect our citizens from further harm and preserve the sanctity of our state’s institutions and businesses.”
The governor appealed to the people, saying, “Let us not allow the actions of a few selfish individuals to divide us.
“Together, we can navigate these challenges and fortify our resolve to build a stronger, more resilient Kano State.”
Protesters had earlier stormed a newly built Nigerian Communication Commission Industrial Park in Kano, broke down place, looted seven items before settling it ablaze.
The newly constructed office was scheduled for inauguration next week.
In the Hotoro area of Kano, some closed shops were forced open and looted while a filling station and a Rufaida shop were also set ablaze.
