Just in: Legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu dies after performance in Lagos 

Iconic Nigerian singer and songwriter, Onyeka Onwenu, is dead.

She reportedly died Tuesday night at the Reddington Hospital, Lagos, after she collapsed at a birthday party of her friend, Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

Newstrends learnt that the music legend had left her seat to perform on stage.

She thereafter returned to her seat when she reportedly slumped and was rushed to the hospital.

“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.

“She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” a family source said.

Born 31st January,1952, Onyeka Onwenu was a talented artist. She was not just a veteran singer; she was an actress, a journalist, a politician and a rights activist.

She was dubbed “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press.

She was at a time the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.

In 2013, she was appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.

She will be remembered for her numerous songs, including “Wait for me” which she sang with Juju king, Sunny Ade.

No official confirmation has been given by her family as of the time of filing this report.

Speaking as a guest on Nollywood on Radio, Aigbe revealed that having a partner within the entertainment industry was a significant factor in her choice.

“One of the reasons I married him is that we’re both in the same industry,” Aigbe explained. “Together, we’re building a production empire. I just felt I needed someone in the industry to collaborate with, and it’s a good thing that he understands it too. Combining our strengths, the future looks promising.

Aigbe’s 2023 cinema movie, Ada Omo Daddy, has already showcased the synergy between her and Adeoti, marking her successful cinema debut. Reflecting on the project’s reception, she said, “The feedback was amazing. I was a bit nervous as it was my first cinema debut, and there was heavy competition from established names in the cinema sector. But I was confident because I knew I had a sellable product.”

 Aigbe also added that her intention is to be on all platforms she can make money from.

“I wont just be on cinemas I will be on all paltforms I can make money from”

Popular actress and filmmaker Eniola Ajao recently shared a harrowing experience on Nollywood on Radio, a show dedicated to Nigerian cinema.

She revealed the emotional toll that false news online had taken on her mental health, describing how she once nearly poisoned herself in response to a hurtful rumour.

“I almost poisoned myself because there was news about me online that was far from true,” Ajao said. “It was the first time in my life that I faced something so painful. I didn’t eat for seven straight days. People around me can testify – I didn’t go anywhere.”

At the time, she was in the midst of planning her next film, a process that became increasingly difficult due to her emotional state. “My sisters were calling, telling me, ‘You have to do this for yourself. You don’t have to poison yourself.’ My son was reaching out to everyone, saying I was struggling with this lie online,” she shared.

The actress added, “I don’t even want to remember those things, honestly”, she recounted on the show.
