Just in: Nigeria’s power grid partially restored after total collapse

The national power grid has been partially restored after a nationwide blackout on Monday, October 14, 2024, which collapsed at 18:48 hours for the sixth time in 2024.

Newstrends received information that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) received 30MW and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) received 20MW, totalling 50MW.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EkEDC) was also not left out in the partial restoration.

For instance, in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin serviced by the EKEDC, where this NewsTrends writer resides, the power came around 8.20am but went off 9.30am

It was learnt that as of 7pm on Monday, only Ibom Power was operational, with 42.7 MW.

It was the sixth time the grid would collapse this year throwing the nation into total darkness.

The collapse resulted in a loss of supply to all its interface Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations.

In July 2024, when the system collapsed, the TCN blamed the unexpected tripping of three power generation units, which removed 313MW from the grid.

The TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, stated in a report that the company could transmit up to 6,000MW of electricity to distribution centres across the country by the end of the year.

But many research reports indicate that Nigeria needs about 33,000MW to have stable electricity.

EFCC arrests radio presenter during live programme

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a raid on Urban Radio 94.5FM in Enugu on Monday evening, resulting in the arrest of a presenter during a live broadcast.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the station expressed its apologies to listeners for the disruption of its programming.

The raid took place at approximately 6:45 p.m. during the ongoing ‘Prime Time’ show.

Urban Radio reported that EFCC operatives detained presenters and seized communication equipment, but did not provide any specific reasons for their actions.

“The Board and Management of Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu regrets the abrupt halting and disruption of our programme on Monday evening.”

READ ALSO:

“Armed men identifying as the EFCC had barged into the studio and interrupted the live program ‘Prime – Time’, forcefully abducted our presenters and took away our communication equipment for reasons they vehemently refused to disclose.”

“Whilst we are following up with the matter, we will continue to inform our dear listeners accordingly through this medium. Once again, we apologize for the unethical break-in into our live studio and disruption of your favourite programmes and hope that the matter will be resolves as soon as possible and for whatever the reasons.”

However, Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokespesman, has defended the anti-graft agency’s action, saying the agency was at the station to arrest Favour Ekoh, a presenter, over alleged involvement in a ponzi scheme in which 103 Nigerians were defrauded.

The EFCC spokesperson said only Ekoh was arrested and that operatives did not take away communication equipment.

He said operatives of the agency tracked the presenter to the station after she shunned several invitations.

The Lagos State High Court has ordered controversial social media critic Martin Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to remove defamatory comments and videos concerning lawyer and human rights activist Femi Falana (SAN) and his son, Folarin.

The court also ordered him to pay N500 million to them for libel, as stated in the pre-action bundle of the judgment.

Justice M. O. Idowu delivered the ruling in suit no: ID/8584/GCM/2024 on Tuesday.

According to him, the publications made by VeryDarkMan on his social media accounts on September 24, 2024, linking Bobrisky to Falz and his father were defamatory and injurious to their public image.

Dawodu stated, “According to the applicants (Falz and Falana), the defendant (VeryDarkMan) knew these statements (Bobrisky’s claims) were false and untrue but proceeded to publish them to injure their reputation.

“Furthermore, the defamatory statements are still trending on the defendant (VeryDarkMan)’s several online platforms and the injury to their reputation continues as long as the publication remains online.”
