Netflix stops support for Nollywood, exits Nigeria

International streaming giant Netflix has officially withdrawn its operations from Nigeria after eight years of supporting Nollywood content.

The exit, which reportedly occurred in November 2024, has been described as a significant setback for the Nigerian film industry, which has relied heavily on financial backing from streaming platforms like Netflix.

Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan confirmed the development during the 2024 Zuma Film Festival, stating that Netflix had stopped commissioning new Nigerian originals.

Afolayan noted he was fortunate to secure a third season for his hit series Anikulapo before the decision was made, but many of his colleagues were not as lucky, with numerous projects being cancelled mid-development.

According to industry insiders, Netflix’s exit was quietly communicated to frequent collaborators, with no public announcement or explanation offered by the platform.

David Karanja, Netflix’s Executive in Charge of Licensing Originals, confirmed the departure in a farewell LinkedIn post, leaving many in the Nollywood community shocked.

While Netflix has not released an official statement, its decision has raised concerns about the future of Nollywood’s growth on the global stage.

However, Afolayan expressed hope that this would serve as a wake-up call for the Nigerian film industry to develop more independent funding models and innovative distribution strategies.

David Karanja wrote: “While the world is beginning to recognize the power of African voices and stories told by Africans, I believe we are on the brink of a watershed moment for African cinema and television, similar to the leaps we’ve seen in music.”

Court orders prosecution of auxiliary nurse linked to Mohbad’s death

The Lagos State Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, has ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions,DPP, to prosecute Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad before his death.

Delivering her ruling yesterday, Magistrate C.A. Shotobi held that Ms Ogedengbe was neither a registered nurse nor a licensed medical practitioner and, therefore, acted unlawfully by administering the tetanus injection that reportedly triggered the complications resulting in the singer’s death.

The coroner expressed concern over regulatory lapses in the health sector, allowing unqualified individuals to operate as healthcare providers.

The court also ordered an investigation into the Nigeria Police’s failure to act on Mohbad’s petition against Naira Marley and Sam Larry before his death. According to Shotobi, “ Pursuant to section 29 of the coroner laws of Lagos State, this court recommends the prosecution of the unlicensed medical personnel, Felicia Ogedengbe, by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence.” Other findings of the Coroner were that Mohbad’s petition to the police on assault, intimidation, against Naira Marley and Sam Larry ought to be a subject of proper investigation in the light of revelations during the coroner proceedings.

It therefore ordered an investigation into the failure of the Nigeria Police to act on a petition filed by the late singer before his death, urging the relevant authorities to determine whether there was official negligence.

Additionally, the coroner blamed Mohbad’s father for the hasty burial without an autopsy and his wife for treating him at home instead of seeking proper medical attention.

Mohbad, a 27-year-old Afrobeats star, died under mysterious circumstances on September 12, 2023, prompting a special investigation team to be formed.

He was a young and very promising Afrobeats star whose creativity and amazing gift made him produce high thrilling lyrics that had won the hearts of millions of fans across the world.

Why I was blacklisted in movie industry – Moji Afolayan

Actress Moji Afolayan has opened up on her long absence from the screen, revealing that she was blacklisted by film marketers after refusing their s3xual advances.

In a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, Afolayan shared that the decision to prioritise her dignity and values over fame and wealth led to a significant impact on her career.

According to Afolayan, film marketers would often provide financial support to producers but in return, they would demand s3xual favors from actresses.

She stated that many married actresses have been involved in such arrangements, sometimes deceiving their husbands.

Afolayan emphasised that she was unwilling to compromise her values, which led to her blacklisting.

“This is because, at that time, when we had marketers at Idumota, they used to give producers money to work.

“However, due to the kind of training I received at home, I cannot trade my body for movies. My husband, who married me, has not even done anything. You will notice that I am trying to speak in proverbs.

“Because I did not do it, they held a meeting among themselves not to call me. I did not sleep with them. I did not offer my body for sex.

“They are all watching this programme. People who are doing it are doing it. Many of them will have their husbands outside while the wives will be with them inside. I am exposing their secrets now.

“They would tell me, ‘is it only my husband?’ I was like is it because you want to help. Then you would have to hold on to your help.

“I thank God I stood with my dignity. That is what I am enjoying today. I held on to my virginity. I stand out among them now. I have only received mercy. They made them stars. Their posters were all around.

“But when they tried to stand alone, there was a great fight, which was bound to happen in that kind of relationship. I did not inform my husband at the time.

“It was because I did not offer myself for sex that they denied me movie roles.

“I was not the only person they did it to. There was one person who was late now, took her job to a marketer there at Arena, but it was turned down. The lady at the time told me to continue with my nobility. She narrated how the marketer told her how he had slept with in the industry.

“They now know how it feels. They have made us social media-friendly. They have pushed us to put movies on YouTube.

“It affected me in terms of income and fame. I cherish my body more than anything. Even my husband knows”.
