Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike
JUST IN: Tension in Abuja as Angry Workers Protest, Chase Wike’s Motorcade
Tension erupted in Abuja on Monday as angry workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) staged a heated protest and reportedly chased the motorcade of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over unresolved labour and welfare issues.
The dramatic incident occurred amid an indefinite strike embarked upon by FCTA workers, backed by organised labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The protesters accused the FCTA leadership of failing to address long-standing grievances such as unpaid promotion arrears, poor welfare conditions, and alleged violations of workers’ rights.
Eyewitnesses said the workers gathered around the FCTA Secretariat and nearby areas, chanting slogans and attempting to block the minister’s convoy as it moved through the vicinity. In videos circulating online, protesters were seen shouting angrily while security operatives struggled to control the situation.

Reports indicate that Minister Wike exited the premises through a back gate to avoid direct confrontation, after which some protesters allegedly pursued his motorcade, escalating tensions in the area.
The protesting workers also converged on the National Industrial Court in Abuja, where they displayed placards demanding the payment of outstanding entitlements and calling for urgent intervention by the Federal Government. Some demonstrators went further to demand Wike’s removal, accusing him of insensitivity to workers’ welfare.
Labour leaders insist the protest will continue until the government addresses the workers’ demands, warning that the strike has already disrupted key administrative activities across the Federal Capital Territory.
As of the time of filing this report, the FCT Administration had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or announce new steps toward resolving the dispute.
