Kano Insecurity: Barau Challenges Govt to Produce Evidence of Alleged Incitement

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has cautioned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to stop politicising issues of insecurity in Kano State and instead focus on tackling the growing security and governance challenges affecting citizens.

Senator Barau issued the warning in response to allegations by the Kano State Government that his recent remarks were capable of undermining ongoing security efforts. The claims were made at the end of the 34th State Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Yusuf.

In a statement released by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President described the allegations as false, malicious, and politically motivated, insisting he never made any comment capable of escalating insecurity. He challenged the state government to provide video evidence of the alleged statement.

“It is unfortunate that the government has descended so low as to concoct lies to tarnish the reputation of the Deputy President of the Senate,” the statement said.

Senator Barau, who also serves as First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said addressing the rising wave of bandit attacks and general insecurity in Kano requires collective effort, not political accusations.

He criticised Governor Yusuf for what he termed administrative failure, adding that Kano had fallen behind due to “misgovernance.”
“Until governance was relegated to the background, Kano used to be second only to Lagos in prosperity. Unfortunately, misgovernance has eroded this,” he stated.

Highlighting his own contributions to improving security in the state, Senator Barau listed several interventions, including:

  • Provision of operational vehicles to all police formations in Kano North Senatorial District
  • Distribution of motorcycles to policemen for rural patrols
  • Renovation of parts of the Kano State Police Headquarters
  • Construction of new police stations across the state
  • Support to the Department of State Services (DSS)
  • Facilitation of major security training institutions such as:
    • NSCDC Training College, Gwarzo
    • Nigeria Police Service Commission Training Institute, Kabo
    • Nigeria Immigration Service Training School, Bichi
  • Installation of solar-powered streetlights across communities to boost nighttime security operations

The statement urged the Kano State Government to emulate these contributions rather than “casting aspersions” on the senator’s personality.
