Former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso
Former Kano State Governor and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has directed associates serving in Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration who are reportedly facing political pressure over the governor’s alleged plan to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) to align with the move temporarily, describing it as a measure to ease rising political tension in Kano State.
Kwankwaso made the remarks in a video shared on Facebook by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, on Tuesday, amid reports of a widening rift between the former governor and his long-time protégé. The video, dated January 13, 2026, addressed concerns over local government chairmen, councillors, secretaries, and other officeholders being pressured to declare loyalty either to Kwankwasiyya or Gandujiyya, a practice he described as “unfair” and potentially divisive.
He stated, “Many LG chairmen called me… likewise some councillors… many state assembly members intimated me about the situation… some of them having sleepless nights,” adding that some officials were reportedly experiencing stress-related health issues due to the mounting political pressure.

Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, recalled the group’s efforts to rebuild grassroots support before returning to power in 2023. He stressed that the movement’s mission focused on better governance, education, job creation, infrastructure, and welfare, and said the principles of the movement must not be compromised.
In response to the escalating tension, Kwankwaso announced a practical solution: officials feeling threatened could temporarily declare loyalty to Governor Yusuf to ensure their safety and maintain stability in the state. He emphasized that the 2027 political campaigns had not officially started, and this measure is intended to douse immediate political friction.
Political analyst Dr. Kabiru Sufi described Kwankwaso’s directive as a strategic move to preserve the Kwankwasiyya base, allowing flexibility for supporters under pressure while maintaining long-term political control.
Kwankwaso also thanked Governor Yusuf for acknowledging the achievements of his administration and urged his allies to remain committed despite persistent defection attempts over the past three years.
