La Liga President confirms Mbappe to Real Madrid move

La Liga president Javier Tebas says Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe will join Real Madrid next season.

The 25-year-old France captain announced last week he is leaving PSG at the end of his contract this summer, without specifying his destination, and Madrid are poised to sign him after years of failed attempts.

“He’s Madrid’s next season, yes,” Tebas told Argentine daily sports newspaper Ole on Monday. “If they’ve signed a five-year deal, he has five seasons of opportunity (to win the Champions League).”

Mbappe is set to join a star-studded Madrid team led by Brazil’s Vinicius Junior and England international Jude Bellingham.

Los Blancos strolled to the Spanish title and are in the Champions League final at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund on June 1.

”(Mbappe) is one of the best players in the world, but Vinicius and Bellingham are there too, Madrid will have a great squad,” continued Tebas. “But that does not guarantee you will win leagues.”

Mbappe is PSG’s all-time record scorer with 256 goals, having joined the club from Monaco in 2017 for 180 million euros ($194 million).

With PSG he won six French league titles but failed to earn Champions League glory, finishing as runners-up to Bayern Munich in 2020.

By joining record 14-time winners Real Madrid, Mbappe would increase his chances of finally earning club football’s most prestigious trophy.

Super Eagles: Marc Brys emerges top candidate to replace Finidi George

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has commenced moves to replace Finidi George, with Belgian coach Marc Brys emerging as a candidate under consideration.

Finidi George announced his resignation as head coach of the Super Eagles last weekend after just two matches in charge of the team.

He endured a difficult start to his campaign as head coach of the three-time African champions after he failed to secure a win against South Africa and Benin Republic in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria were held to 1-1 draw against Bafana Bafana of South Africa before losing 2-1 to Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic side in Abidjan.

George’s decision to resign was reportedly influenced by the NFF’s plan to hire a foreign technical adviser for the team after the two games.

Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reports that the NFF is now considering Marc Brys who is currently the coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

Brys was appointed by the Cameroonian government but has had a strained relationship with Samuel Eto’o, the current president of FECAFOOT.

The Belgian coach was fired by Eto’o last month but was reinstated just days before the World Cup qualifiers against Angola and Cape Verde.

Euro 2024: Spain beat Italy 1-0, England play 1-1 with Denmark

Spain have qualified for the second round of the ongoing 2024 UEFA European Championship.

The Luis de la Fuente side became the second team to book the competition knockout ticket after defeating Italy 1-0 at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Thursday.

A second-half own goal conceded by Riccardo Carlafiori was the sole difference, sending Spain top of Group B with six points.

Italy, the defending champions, cut a timid apparition of themselves throughout the game, and the scoreline was kept respectable by Gianluigi Donnarumma’s saves.

But even the goalkeeper was helpless in the 55th minute after he had gone down to save a header from Alvaro Morata, and the ball ricocheted off the shin of Carlafiori and into the net.

In the other games of the day, England were dealt a reality check and held to a 1-1 draw against Denmark.

The Three Lions had taken the lead after Harry Kane stroked the ball home from the six-yard area.

Shortly, the Danes responded with a sublime strike from Marten Hjulmand from 30 yards out. The shot flew beyond the stretched limb of Jordan Pickford into the net.

Slovenia and Serbia also played out a one-all draw earlier in the day.
