Man United fan killed by Arsenal supporter laid to rest, family demands justice

The burial of 36-year-old man Benjamin Ndyamuhaki, a Manchester United fan, took place on Wednesday, October 30, at Kabungo Cell, Katenga Parish, Kaharo Sub County, Kabale District.

Ndyamuhaki, reportedly the victim of a fatal altercation with an Arsenal fan, was mourned by family and friends who gathered to bid farewell to the fifth of eleven siblings.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 27, at Kyobugombe Trading Center after a heated exchange in a video room.

The altercation reportedly erupted following a 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Liverpool in an English Premier League match.

According to eyewitnesses, tensions flared when Liverpool scored a late equalizer, prompting Ndyamuhaki to celebrate.

His celebration, which included throwing popcorn, allegedly provoked Arsenal supporter Onan Byampangi, who subsequently struck Ndyamuhaki with a stick, resulting in severe injuries.

“I was informed on Monday morning that two men fought each other on Sunday evening and one was taken to Bukinda Health Center before being transferred to Rugarama where he died. We are actively searching for the suspect, who was last seen in Ntungamo,” said Mr. Edmond Tumwesigye, Chairman of LCIII of Kaharo Sub County, while addressing mourners.

At the funeral, Mr. Kenneth Atukwase, Ndyamuhaki’s elder brother, remembered him as a beloved and diligent family member.

“Our brother loved us very much and worked hard for our family. We are heartbroken by his untimely passing. May he rest in peace,” he shared.

Another family member, Mr. Barnard Tumuhimbise, urged the family to avoid retaliation, saying, “Our son did nothing to deserve this; God has already decided about his life. Children, do not seek revenge, for it is God who will take it on our behalf.”

Mr. Dan Kasaku, chairman of the Rukiga Taxi Drivers Association, highlighted Ndyamuhaki’s reputation as a “humble, trustworthy and hardworking” individual.

“Benyi was known for his cooperation, truthfulness, and humility. We have truly lost a good man,” he expressed.

Rev. Michael Asiimwe, pastor of Rwesasi Church, advised mourners and football enthusiasts to manage their emotions, particularly during tense matches. “I love football, but because I struggle with anger, I avoid video rooms for games. If you know you can’t control your anger, stay away. Find ways to cope instead of resorting to violence,” he advised.

Kigezi Regional Coordinator of the Alliance for National Transition (ANT), Mr. Bonny Tumuranze, also emphasized the need for restraint and collaboration with authorities. “We are working with the police to ensure that the suspect is arrested and brought to justice,” he said.

Kabale District Police Commander (DPC), Mr. Joseph Bakaleke, confirmed that a manhunt is underway to locate Byampangi, who remains at large.

English FA apologises to Muslim football player banned for refusing to wear shorts

The Football Association (FA) has issued an apology to Muslim football player Iqra Ismail after she was barred from playing in a Greater London Women’s Football League match for refusing to wear shorts due to her religious beliefs.

Ismail, who plays for United Dragons, was set to come on as a substitute during Sunday’s game against Tower Hamlets but was stopped by the referee.

The FA has assured Ismail that she will be allowed to wear tracksuit bottoms in future matches to accommodate her religious practices.

In a video shared on social media, Ismail expressed her disappointment, stating, “The Greater London Women’s Football League have stopped me from playing because of my religious beliefs, because I refused to wear shorts with my playing kit.”

Ismail, who has played in the league for nearly five years while wearing tracksuit bottoms, added that this issue has grown over the years.

“Every year they have made it more and more difficult for women like me to play,” she explained. “This year they have drawn the line and banned me from playing until I compromise my beliefs.”

She recounted how the Middlesex FA referee for Sunday’s game informed her that he had received strict instructions from the league not to allow women to wear tracksuit bottoms, regardless of whether they matched the team kit.

In response, an FA spokesperson told Sky Sports News, “We are aware of this matter and we are in contact with Middlesex FA to ensure that it is quickly resolved. We proactively wrote to all county FAs and match officials across the women’s grassroots game earlier this year to confirm that women and girls should be allowed to wear clothing that ensures their faith or religious beliefs are not compromised. We remain deeply committed to ensuring that English football is an inclusive and welcoming environment for everybody.”

Ismail, a prominent advocate for diversity and inclusion in football, was named to the Football Black List five years ago and recently spoke at the FA’s Your Game Your Way event at Brentford FC.

Reflecting on the incident, she said, “They ask me why women’s football lacks diversity and why it is difficult to find women who look like me in the competitive game. Things like this are the reason.”

Man United crush Leicester 5-2 after Ten-Hag exit

Manchester United lifted spirits at Old Trafford with a commanding 5-2 victory over Leicester City, advancing to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in their first game after Erik ten Hag’s departure.

Under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, United’s star players, including Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, delivered standout performances, scoring twice each. Alejandro Garnacho also contributed with a goal, fueling an exciting display.

Van Nistelrooy, who once built his own reputation for scoring goals at Old Trafford, energized the team and fans, echoing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s memorable interim start with a similarly high-scoring debut. As the crowd buzzed, United shook off recent struggles, displaying a sense of freedom and confidence missing under Ten Hag’s tenure.

Experienced players led the charge. Fernandes, who hadn’t scored all season, capitalized on Leicester’s errors, finding his form as he orchestrated play, pressed forward, and made crucial passes.

The captain ranked second in touches and led in creating chances and forward passes, embracing the renewed sense of freedom under Van Nistelrooy’s management.

Casemiro’s stunning long-range strike sparked life into United’s game. Had it not been for that initial goal, United risked sliding into familiar, unsteady play. Instead, it was the turning point the team needed, with Casemiro’s second goal also benefiting from a bit of luck, bouncing off both posts before finding the back of the net.

Leicester’s defense left gaps that Garnacho exploited, albeit amid some debate over an offside that went unreviewed due to VAR’s absence.

After the match, Van Nistelrooy acknowledged the change in fortunes, remarking, “We scored some great goals. But luck was on our side as well.” He pointed out that while United had created big chances in previous games under Ten Hag, this time, their finishing and fortune aligned.

Yet, the win raises questions. Ten Hag’s sacking reflects an ongoing cycle at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure: players often find renewed form when a new manager arrives, only to lose it over time.

Although sitting 14th in the Premier League led to Ten Hag’s departure, United’s performance against Leicester highlights an issue beyond management.

Ruben Amorim, expected to replace Ten Hag, inherits the challenge of sustaining this energy and addressing the deeper issues that have plagued United’s recent seasons.
