Lagos Assembly Orders Suspension of Makoko Demolitions

Lagos Assembly Orders Suspension of Makoko Demolitions

The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered the immediate suspension of demolitions in Makoko, following growing concerns over the impact of the exercise on residents of the densely populated waterfront community.

The decision was reached during plenary after lawmakers considered reports that homes, shops, and sources of livelihood were being pulled down in parts of Makoko and Oworoonsoki, allegedly without adequate notice or resettlement arrangements. The development sparked outrage among residents and human rights groups.

Members of the Assembly directed relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), to halt all demolition activities in the affected areas with immediate effect.

Lawmakers also resolved to summon officials of the ministries and agencies involved to appear before the House and provide explanations on the legal basis for the demolitions, compliance with court orders, and measures taken to protect affected residents from homelessness.

During the debate, legislators stressed that while the Lagos State Government is empowered to enforce urban planning and environmental laws, such enforcement must follow due process, respect the rule of law, and be carried out with consideration for the welfare of citizens.

The Assembly further called for stakeholder engagement with Makoko residents, traditional leaders, and civil society organisations to find a sustainable and humane solution to the long-standing issues surrounding the waterfront settlement.

The intervention by the lawmakers has brought temporary relief to residents, many of whom had protested against the demolitions, accusing authorities of targeting vulnerable communities without compensation or alternative housing.
