Lagos Lawmaker Demands Justice Over Death of Dispatch Rider

Lagos State House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Transportation, Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, OON, has condemned the brutal killing of a dispatch rider allegedly at the hands of members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Lagos Island.

A viral video, which surfaced on Thursday, September 18, 2025, captured the moment a union member, identified as Shamsideen Adio, alongside his associates, attacked the victim on Tapa Street, Lagos Island. The disturbing footage showed that even after the dispatch rider lost consciousness, Adio continued to assault him despite efforts by bystanders to revive him.

Describing the incident as “barbaric, shameful, inhuman, and heartbreaking,” Hon. Adedeji stressed that the police must ensure that Adio and others involved are prosecuted to a logical conclusion.

“How does one assault his fellow being to the extent of snuffing life out of him without considering that this is a person who has the same rights and privileges? We can just imagine a dispatch rider who left home to earn a living not returning home because somebody who thinks he is above the law decided to take his life,” he said.

The lawmaker further urged the leadership of the NURTW, led by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to immediately suspend Adio and disown his actions pending the outcome of police investigations. He emphasized that the union must not accommodate members who are lawless and lack regard for human life.

Commending the Lagos State Police Command for swiftly arresting the main suspect, Hon. Adedeji insisted that justice must not only be done but also seen to be done, to serve as a deterrent to others.

He added that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for the NURTW to embark on continuous education and enlightenment of its members to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“The sanctity of human life has no alternative and no human being can be more superior than the other. Lagosians want to see that the culprits face the legal consequences of their actions,” he noted.

The dispatch rider’s death has since sparked outrage among Lagosians, with many calling for stronger measures to curb lawlessness among transport union members in the state.
