Lagos policemen trick innocent ladies, deflate their tyres
Somtochukwu Ogu and Onyiyechi Ogu (not real names) have narrated to FIJ how police officers attached to the Akinpelu Police Station in Bolade Oshodi, Lagos, deflated their car tyres on Monday evening.
The two ladies told FIJ they were driving home through the Oshodi area of the state when the police officers stopped them and entered their vehicle.
They said these policemen then ordered them to drive through a route that led to their station.
While parked in front of the station, the policemen began deflating three tyres. Somtochukwu showed FIJ a video recording of the men perpetrating the act.
“We were going home, and used Google Maps as a guide,” Somtochukwu told FIJ. “The police stopped us and said the route we were about to enter was a one-way route, and we were about to enter wrongly, so we told them the map led us there.

“They entered our vehicle as though they wanted to show us the right route, but as they were showing us where to drive to, we ended up in front of their station.
“When we came out of the vehicle and demanded to know what we were being accused of, they began deflating our tyres.”
She was able to identify two of the policemen as Ojelade Ebenezer and Akinpelu.
Somtochukwu told FIJ that after she and her sister observed the policemen’s act, they approached Nkiruka Ugwu, the station’s DPO, and laid a complaint.
Ugwu then ordered the men to repair the tyres and let the ladies go. She, however, did not initiate disciplinary actions against the policemen.
When FIJ called the Lagos Police Complaint Rapid Response Unit (CRU) on Tuesday morning, they asked that our reporter follow up with the DPO.
FIJ called Ugwu afterwards, and she appealed to FIJ to let the matter die a natural death as, according to her, she detained the policemen over the night and let them go in the morning.
FIJ found that Ugwu had in 2022 been accused of asking her policemen to arrest PoS operators around the station, and forcing them to bail themselves with N10,000 each.
FIJ called Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, but he did not answer our calls. He also did not respond to a text message sent to him on Tuesday morning.

Kano bakers summoned over bread price hike
Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), summoned flour dealers from Singer Market and the chairman of the bakers’ association over what he described as an arbitrary bread price increase in the state.
He issued a stern warning to the state’s bakers against arbitrary bread price increases.
Rimin Gado reported that the commission has received numerous consumer complaints about high bread prices, despite a decrease in flour costs.

The price of flour, a key ingredient in bread production, has dropped to around N63,000 from N70,000.
At a press briefing in Kano, Rimin Gado stressed that the PCACC has a dual mandate; combating corruption and serving as an ombudsman. He stated that it will not remain passive in the face of unjustified price hikes on essential goods.
“We have been monitoring price increases for essential items and investigating whether these increases are justified. We are also identifying those responsible for any arbitrary price hikes,” Rimin Gado explained.
He assured that the commission will take necessary legal actions to address the rising cost of bread.

Man impregnates 16-year-old sister-in-law in Anambra
A 41-year-old man, identified as Nwalobi Fredrick, has been arrested for allegedly impregnating his 16-year-old sister-in-law(name withheld) in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Nwalobi, an artisan who hails from Ebonyi State, was arrested by security operatives on Thursday, after the family of the girl reported the incident at the office of the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare in Awka.
The suspect, who was said to be newly remarried in April after the death of his first wife, blamed the devil for his action.
This development was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Chidinmma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.
When interrogated, the suspect said he didn’t have money to take care of the girl since he now had his own family.
The statement read, “During interrogation, the 16-year-old girl revealed that the incident started in late January when she was brought to be kept in the custody of her in-law to enable her to finish her secondary education since the demise of her mother.

“She explained that it was just a day after settling in his house that Mr. Nwalobi first had carnal knowledge of her and ever since, has been having his way with her body.
“Upon further interrogation, she revealed that she was already four months gone, and ever since she became pregnant, her in-law had refused to take responsibility for putting her in a family way.
“Meanwhile, the 41-year-old suspect, who remarried in April after the death of his first wife, says he doesn’t have money to take care of the girl since he now has his own family.”
Ikeanyionwu added that despite the suspect’s pleas, Obinabo handed him over to the Divisional Police in Ekwulobia for further investigation.
Obinabo vowed to get to the root of the matter to ensure justice for the victim to serve as a deterrent to others who are into such acts.
