Lagos records first rain in 2023

Some parts of Lagos metropolis on Sunday recorded the first rain in the year 2023.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the rain fell around Lawanson in Surulere, Apapa Road, Costain and Oyingbo areas of Lagos.

The morning rain, which did not last more than 30 minutes, varied in intensity in the different areas mentioned.

NAN observed that the rain only drizzled around Ijegun, along the Jakande/Isolo area of Lagos.

However, the drizzle was enough to reduce the dust on the road.

Some residents of these areas who spoke to NAN expressed delight but urged that measures be put in place by government and residents to prevent floods.

They also hoped the coming of the rain will help to ease the heat experienced at night as well as make for improved yields in the year’s agricultural season.

A civil servant, Joy Obinnu, told NAN that the rain, which started about 10am, fell for 20 minutes consistently in Lawanson

Obinnu said that young boys were seen playing football under the rain in excitement.

She expressed the hope that the rain would reduce the prevailing heat being experienced in the neighbourhood and usher cool nights.

Some other residents of Lagos state wished that the rain could fall more than it did on Sunday to reduce the heat being experienced, which according to them, have been made worse by epileptic power supply and fuel scarcity.

Akin Obasa, an agriculturist, said the rain should be a reminder for farmers to start preparing for the farming season.

He, however, said they should still wait a while for the rain to be a bit more consistent before they start cultivating.

“Farmers should not rush to the farm to start planting but they can start making preparations for the new planting season.”

David Ola, a Geography Teacher, urged the government to prepare for the rainy season so as not to be caught unawares when heavy rain comes.

According to him, the Ministry of Environment , Ministry of Works and all other relevant agencies should ensure that canals, gutters, drainage channels and roads cleared of waste and silt.

Ola also cautioned residents against removing silt from gutters and leaving them on the roadsides only for rains or water to wash them back into where they were evacuated from.

Dr Linda Ibe advised residents to observe precautionary measures to avert ailments usually associated with the rainy season.

According to her, the ailments included cold, malaria, typhoid fever, diarrhoea, cholera, Hepatitis A and conjunctivitis ·

“This is the season when contagious diseases are on the increase.

“The common diseases associated with the season include malaria, typhoid fever, cold , cholera, diarrhoea, Hepatitis A, among others.

“Unfortunately, children and the aged are most vulnerable to these diseases.

“Many drain channels are going to be filled with stagnant water due to inadequate waste management.

“Most gutters in Lagos do not flow. They contain stagnant water. So, residents should not litter the environment and gutters so as to avoid flooding.

“Grasses around the homes and environment should be cut. Empty and useless cans and containers should be thrown away to avoid breeding mosquitoes, reptiles and rodents.

“Parents are advised to take good care of their children and also keep them covered from cold.

“All residents should keep their environment clean and safe and in addition, keep themselves healthy,” Otti advised

Abuja British school shut over student bullying viral video

Abuja-based Lead British International School has been shut down for three days after a viral video showing an incident of bullying in the school.

This was announced on Tuesday during a press briefing attended by concerned parents on the school premises.

The viral video, which captured a female student being subjected to physical and emotional abuse by her peers, had sparked public outrage.

The footage depicted the victim being repeatedly slapped by another female student in an interrogation session.

The incident prompted widespread condemnation and calls for swift action to address the issue.

Head of Lead British International School, Abraham Ogunkambi, issued a statement on Tuesday, in response to the incident.

He stressed the school’s disapproval of the incident, adding that an investigation into the matter had commenced.

“The school management is treating this matter with the utmost seriousness,” Ogunkambi said.

He added that the school had already been in contact with the victim and her parents, offering support and counselling services to help them manage the emotional and psychological effects of the incident.

Yahaya Bello: Case adjourned till May 5, gives condition to appear in court

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, says he is willing to appear before a federal high court in Abuja provided he will not be arrested.

He stated this on Tuesday through his lawyer Adeola Adedipe shortly before the Federal High Court Abuja adjourned the case till May 5.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is seeking to arraign Bello on 19 counts of alleged money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N80.2 billion.
He was initially scheduled for arraignment on April 18 but he was absent from court on the day.
At the resumed court session on Tuesday, Adedipe, a member of Bello’s legal team, said his client would have appeared in court but was worried about being taken into custody.
“The defendant wants to come to court but he is afraid that there is an order of arrest hanging on his head,” Adedipe said.
He asked the court to revoke the warrant of arrest issued on April 17 against the former governor.
Adedipe argued that the charge had not been served on his client as required by law at the time the warrant of arrest was made.
“As at the time the warrant was issued, the order for substituted service had not been made. That order was just made this morning,” he said.
“A warrant of arrest should not be hanging on his neck when we leave this court,” counsel to the defendant added.
But EFCC’s lawyer, Kemi Pinheiro, argued that for the arrest warrant to be vacated, the former governor must be arraigned and his plea taken.
Earlier, the presiding judge, Emeka Nwite, had ordered that the defendant be served the charges by substituted means through his lawyers.
The court fixed May 10 to rule on the application to vacate the warrant of arrest.

Five children trapped inside abandoned car in Minna die

Five children have reportedly died of suffocation in an abandoned vehicle in the Albishiri area of Minna, Niger State.

The children were said to have gone missing on Sunday morning before they were found dead at 6pm on the same day.

One of the children was said to be a child of the owner of the car while another one was the child of a neighbour.

The remaining three were siblings, belonging to one Abdullahi Etsu of Etsu-tasha, from the Albishiri area.

Spokesman for the police command in Niger, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.

He said the children were between the ages of five and 13.

Abiodun said the children were found trapped in a Honda Civic vehicle in the area.

He stated, “On 21/4/2024 at about 6.30pm, based on information received at Kpakungu Div, five children of about 5-13 years of age were found trapped in a Honda Civic vehicle with Reg No. GO 778 ABC at Albishiri area of Minna,” the statement reads.

“They were found to have suffocated in the vehicle, while their bodies were later removed by the various Parents, as Police visited the scene.

“However, the owner of the vehicle was invited for questioning, as the unfortunate incident is under investigation.”
