Lieutenant Yerima faces police scrutiny after obscured licence plate incident
A tense encounter between security agencies in Abuja has sparked debate after the FCT Police Command questioned Nigerian Navy officer Lieutenant A.M. Yerima for allegedly covering his vehicle’s number plate.
The confrontation, captured in a video trending on social media, has reignited discussions about road law enforcement, accountability, and the conduct of uniformed personnel.
In the footage, police officers demand an explanation for the obscured licence plate, a violation often associated with attempts to evade identification or security checks. Yerima reportedly insisted on his rank, saying he is “an officer,” while police officers pressed him to properly identify himself.

Yerima argued that he should not be questioned, claiming the officers were “doing wrong.”
The incident follows a previous high-profile clash involving Yerima and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, where military personnel allegedly blocked Wike’s team from accessing a disputed parcel of land in Abuja’s Gaduwa District, raising nationwide concerns over civilian authority and military obedience.
In a related development, reports indicate that Yerima was trailed by unidentified individuals in unmarked vehicles on Sunday, evading them with sharp driving maneuvers. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, heightening concerns about his safety and the wider land dispute.
