Lionel Messi Makes History With Second Straight MLS MVP as Inter Miami Clinches First Title

Lionel Messi has rewritten Major League Soccer history after securing his second consecutive MLS Most Valuable Player award, cementing his dominance in American football. The Inter Miami superstar, who inspired the club to its first MLS Cup title, becomes the first player to win back-to-back MVP honors and only the second to claim two MVP awards overall, following Preki’s wins in 1997 and 2003.

The 38-year-old Argentine icon delivered a sensational 2025 campaign, topping the league with 29 goals and 19 assists to earn the MLS Golden Boot. Messi also joined Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco as only the second player in league history to lead MLS in both goals and assists during the regular season.

His brilliance continued into the playoffs, where he scored six goals and added nine assists. In the final, Messi produced two decisive assists as Inter Miami defeated Vancouver 3-1, earning him the MLS Cup MVP award.

This latest accolade adds to Messi’s unmatched legacy, which includes eight Ballon d’Or titles, multiple FIFA Best Player awards, two FIFA World Cup Golden Balls, three UEFA Men’s Player of the Year trophies, and six European Golden Shoes. He has also been named Argentina Footballer of the Year a record 15 times.

With his three-year contract extension signed in October, Messi continues to elevate Inter Miami and reinforce his status as one of football’s greatest-ever talents.
