Local govts yet to get direct allocations, 4 months after Supreme Court judgement
All the 774 local governments are still tied to their respective state governments for funds despite a July judgement of the Supreme Court granting them full financial autonomy.
Newstrends notes that four months after the landmark judgement of the apex court of the land, the Federal Government has not implemented the order on direct allocation to the local government accounts.
Interestingly, it was the FG that took the matter to the Supreme Court seeking financial autonomy for the LGAs.
Surprisingly, the current delay is said to be due to lack of approval from President Bola Tinubu for the full implementation of local government financial autonomy.

National President of the National Union of Local Government Employees, Akeem Ambali, recalled that the Federal Government had set up an inter-ministerial committee to facilitate the implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy. The committee, chaired by the Secretary to Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, submitted a technical report to President Tinubu for approval, but the President had yet to give the needed approval.
“The recommendations by the committee have been submitted to the President, and we are eagerly awaiting the start of the implementation,” Ambali said.
