Man bathes neighbour with hot water in Port Harcourt

A 31-year-old woman named Blessing is in critical condition after her neighbor, identified as Ejike, allegedly scalded her with hot water in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Azikiwe Street, Mile 2, following an accidental encounter involving Ejike’s young son.

According to witnesses, Blessing, a hairstylist, was retrieving boiling water from an electric kettle to style a customer’s hair when Ejike’s son bumped into her, causing some of the water to spill on the ground, with a small splash hitting the boy’s leg.

While Blessing was comforting the boy, Ejike emerged from his room to inquire about the situation.

Despite the neighbors’ explanations, Ejike allegedly became enraged, grabbed the kettle, and poured its contents onto Blessing’s chest, with some of the hot water splashing onto her face.

Blessing was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she is receiving treatment for severe burns.

The source said, “As other neighbours were narrating what happened to Ejike, Blessing was still sympathizing with the little boy, he (Ejike) reached for the hot water in the kettle which was on the ground behind Blessing, came in front of the young woman’s front and poured the hot water on her breast which also splashed her face.”

After the attack, Ejike reportedly fled, while Blessing was rushed to the Azikiwe Police Division, where she was issued a medical form and then taken to a hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the lady’s family is demanding justice, saying the action of Ejike is condemnable.

The woman’s elder brother, Goodluck Nwankwo while speaking to newsmen said, “We want the Police to get the young man arrested. Then if he is arrested he will see what he did to my sister.

“It is not right, I have to do the necessary thing so that the Government can take over the matter. I want justice to be done.”

He added, “Due to the medical attention they gave her yesterday, she is getting better but the problem is the money they are asking is too much and I have spent much already.

“I am thinking if I have to go back to Anambra State and come back to be able to raise some money.”

It was observed that Blessing sustained severe burns on her chest due to the incident.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying the man had been arrested,

Iringe-koko, a Superintendent of Police, stated, “Yes I’m aware and the man has been arrested, The police have issued the woman a medical form and she is receiving treatment.”

NDDC empowers Niger Delta young entrepreneurs with N30bn

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has pledged to galvanise the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) by releasing N30 billion counterpart fund for the development of young entrepreneurs.

The NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku who disclosed this in Port Harcourt, restated the Commission’s commitment to empowering the people of the region through economic programmes.

He highlighted the NDCCITMA’s role in training youths, supporting SMEs, and designing industry-friendly skill development programmes.

Ogbuku said the NDDC was supporting the NDCCITMA to drive economic growth and development in the Niger Delta region by providing financial support, training and networking opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs.

He said,  “We are providing N30 billion to fund projects and support businesses to ensure the sustainability of our youth development initiatives.

READ ALSO:

“We will release the matching funds so the entrepreneurs can access them to boost their businesses. In our 2024 budget, we have provision for N30 billion which we are to use as matching funds for the chamber of commerce. We are working towards releasing this fund so that the chamber of commerce can start work in earnest.

“The Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce will strengthen young entrepreneurs in the region. It is no longer acceptable for our youths to be contented with receiving stipends while at home doing nothing.
Ogbuku remarked that the Commission was collaborating with the Bank of Industry, BOI, to ensure the success of NDDC’s youth development programmes.

“The current NDDC Board and Management choose to look at sustainable options in designing youth programmes. In the past, we did a lot in supporting entrepreneurs in the Niger Delta but these activities were not properly documented and backed with verifiable data.

“Our new strategy is to support genuine entrepreneurs rather than people who are just portfolio entrepreneurs because we know that the government alone cannot employ everybody. Many university graduates are coming out, and the government cannot employ all of them. However, we can empower them by creating an environment where they can engage other persons to expand their businesses.”

Oshiomhole supports Edo Assembly suspension of council chairmen

The suspension of the 18 elected local government chairmen and their deputies in Edo State has received the backing of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Oshiomhole, now a senator representing Edo North senatorial district, expressed his support for the decision of the State House of Assembly while speaking to newsmen at his residence in Iyamho, Estako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to Oshiomhole, the council chairmen were paying huge amounts to the immediate past Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki. He said that the new Sheriff in town, Governor Monday Okpebholo, is stopping the bad guys and the bleeding that Edo was going through.

He said, “People already know that there is a new Sheriff in town. He is stopping all the bad guys and stopping the bleeding that Edo was going through.

“It is not a secret that Local Government Councils were paying huge amounts of money to his predecessor (Godwin Obaseki), and he says ‘stop’, not while I am here. We want the money to be used to develop the localities.”

The Edo State House of Assembly had suspended the 18 Local government chairmen and their deputies for two months for alleged insubordination and gross misconduct. The suspension followed a petition to the House by Governor Okpebholo, who accused the council executives of refusing to submit financial account statements of their local government to the state government.

Police warn errant cops misusing IGP’s name, office

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the actions of some errant officers, which undermines the reputation of the force.

The Force, in a statement on Saturday signed by its Public Relations Office, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned in totality the misuse of the name of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by some officers to intimidate victims and perpetrate their nefarious act.

Adejobi mentioned that, ”Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions taken against those who have been exposed, some officers are still engaging in these shameful acts that erode public trust.”

He mentioned that the purpose of misusing the IGP’s name is to deceive unsuspecting civilians into believing the IGP ordered or is aware of their actions.

”The Nigeria Police Force is concerned about the persistent unprofessional conduct of a few police officers, which undermines the standards and reputation of the Nigeria Police Force.

”Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions taken against those who have been exposed, some officers are still engaging in these shameful acts that erode public trust.

”Even more alarming is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate these illegal acts.

”The intention behind this tactic is to intimidate victims into believing that the IGP is aware of and approves of their illegal activities. As a result, victims are often deterred from reporting these incidents to higher authorities,” he said.

Adejobi advised Nigerians to report to the nearest station suspicious cases of victimisation by errant officers.

He adds, ”We urge members of the public to report any misconduct by police officers to their superiors, the heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states, or the Commissioner of Police in the state. Contact information for the CRU in all states has been published previously.

”Members of the public are therefore advised to exercise caution when approached by officers or individuals claiming connections with the IGP or any senior officer for the purpose of influence or favour.

”In such instances, we urge you to immediately report such cases to the Nigeria Police Force via DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja—08184077076; ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja—08037168147; CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja—08069318238; SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to the IGP—08094712605.

”The Nigeria Police Force assures all Nigerians of its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We encourage the public to collaborate with us by reporting any suspicious activities to ensure that justice and fairness prevail at all times.”
