Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes equaled the Premier League assist record as the Red Devils defeated Nottingham Forest 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at Old Trafford to secure a third-place finish.

The Portuguese midfielder registered his 20th league assist of the season, matching the long-standing Premier League record jointly held by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne.

Fernandes achieved the milestone in the 76th minute when his dangerous cross was converted by Bryan Mbeumo for United’s third goal of the afternoon.

The assist capped another brilliant performance from the midfielder, who was recently named the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year after an outstanding campaign for Manchester United.

The match itself produced plenty of drama, controversy, and attacking football, with both teams already having achieved their primary objectives before kickoff. United had secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, while Nottingham Forest guaranteed Premier League survival the previous weekend.

Left-back Luke Shaw volleyed home emphatically to score his first Premier League goal in more than three years, giving the home fans an ideal start at Old Trafford.

Despite dominating large periods of the opening half, United failed to extend their advantage before the break, while Forest created several dangerous opportunities of their own.

The visitors eventually found an equalizer shortly after halftime when defender Morato headed in Elliot Anderson’s inviting delivery at the back post.

However, Manchester United restored their lead almost immediately through Matheus Cunha in one of the game’s most controversial moments.

The assist officially placed Fernandes alongside Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in Premier League history with 20 assists in a single season.

Mbeumo’s strike was also significant personally, as it ended the forward’s goal drought stretching back to February.

Nottingham Forest refused to surrender and reduced the deficit shortly afterward through Morgan Gibbs-White, who fired into the bottom corner following excellent work from Elliot Anderson.

The England international was making his first appearance since suffering a serious facial injury in a collision with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez earlier this month.

Manchester United nearly witnessed another historic Fernandes moment in stoppage time when the midfielder set up Diogo Dalot with a brilliant pass, but the defender’s effort struck the post, denying Fernandes a record-breaking 21st assist.

The victory ensured United finished third in the Premier League standings and continued their strong resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Carrick has impressed since taking charge in January and is reportedly close to signing a permanent contract with the club after guiding United back into Europe’s elite competition.

The match also carried emotional significance for veteran midfielder Casemiro, who received a standing ovation from Old Trafford supporters during what could be his final home appearance for Manchester United.
