Manchester United Sack Ruben Amorim After 14 Months Amid Internal Rift

Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as manager just 14 months after his arrival at Old Trafford, the club confirmed on Monday, following what sources described as an irreparable breakdown in internal relations.

The decision was taken early Monday by the club’s leadership, despite United sitting sixth in the Premier League and still firmly in contention for European qualification.

In an official statement, the club said: “With Manchester United currently sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly concluded that now is the right time to make a change. This decision is intended to give the team the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible league finish.”

According to sports journalist David Oistein, United’s senior executives — led by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox — agreed to terminate Amorim’s tenure after months of mounting tension behind the scenes.

Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who is currently head coach of the club’s Under-18 side, is expected to take charge as interim manager. His first game will be Wednesday night’s away fixture against Burnley, with the club planning to appoint a permanent manager in the summer.

Amorim’s dismissal follows a turbulent weekend in which the Portuguese coach clashed with the media before and after Sunday’s Premier League draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

During his pre-match press conference, Amorim appeared visibly frustrated, refusing to address questions regarding transfers or whether he had been asked to alter his tactical philosophy. Since joining United last year, he had faced criticism from sections of the fanbase and pundits over what was perceived as an inflexible tactical approach.

After the Leeds match, Amorim intensified speculation about his future by stressing that he joined Manchester United to work as a manager rather than a head coach. He also hinted at a possible separation at the end of his contract, repeatedly questioning his long-term role at the club.

Reports in recent weeks had highlighted growing friction between Amorim and Jason Wilcox, with the former Sporting CP boss reportedly unhappy over unmet transfer assurances — tensions that ultimately proved decisive.

Despite the upheaval, Manchester United remain level on points with Chelsea in fifth place and just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, keeping their Champions League hopes alive.
