Sheikh Gumi Denies Claims of Being Targeted in US Airstrikes in Sokoto
Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed reports alleging that he was marked for elimination during recent US airstrikes on terrorist targets in Sokoto State, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi clarified that a viral video being circulated online was taken out of context and referred to an incident dating back to 2012, when he was allegedly targeted by members of the Boko Haram insurgent group.
The cleric stressed that he never suggested that the United States or its military operations posed any threat to his life and maintained that he is currently safe and unharmed.

“There is fake news going viral that wrongly claims I said I was targeted by the US attack on Nigerian soil,” Gumi said. “I never said so, nor did I ever consider such a possibility. I am comfortably staying in my home with my family without fear, intimidation, or apprehension.”
Explaining the origin of the misunderstanding, Gumi said the comments were drawn from a mosque lecture in which he recounted how Boko Haram militants attempted to assassinate him over a decade ago.
According to him, the planned attack failed after the explosives carried by the assailants detonated prematurely near his residence, killing them instantly.
“I believe Allah protected me from being killed by terrorists masquerading as Boko Haram,” he added.
Gumi urged media organisations that published the reports to issue public retractions and apologies, insisting that the narrative linking him to the US airstrikes in Sokoto was entirely unfounded.
