Military Rule Is More Dangerous Than Tinubu’s Govt — Okonkwo Warns Nigerians
Veteran Nollywood actor and political commentator Kenneth Okonkwo has warned Nigerians against calls for military rule, describing it as far more dangerous than the current President Bola Tinubu-led government, despite public dissatisfaction over economic hardship and insecurity.
Okonkwo issued the warning while reacting to growing frustration among citizens and discussions in some quarters advocating military intervention as a solution to Nigeria’s challenges.
He argued that while Nigerians may be critical of policies under Tinubu’s administration, a return to military rule would worsen the country’s problems and undermine decades of democratic progress.

According to Okonkwo, military regimes are often associated with authoritarianism, suppression of civil liberties, weak accountability, and the absence of democratic checks and balances. He stressed that such governments leave citizens with little to no avenue for expressing dissent or seeking change peacefully.
The actor and commentator emphasised that, unlike military rule, democracy allows citizens to influence governance through elections, public debate, civil society engagement, and adherence to the rule of law, even when leaders fall short.
Okonkwo also urged the Tinubu administration to address pressing issues, including economic hardship, rising cost of living, and insecurity, to restore public confidence in governance and strengthen democratic institutions.
He warned that romanticising military takeovers could destabilise the nation and reverse hard-earned democratic gains, stressing that active civic engagement and democratic accountability remain the solution to Nigeria’s challenges.
His remarks come amid increasing public debate over governance, leadership, and the state of democracy in Nigeria, as citizens continue to grapple with socioeconomic and security issues.
