Tinubu Ends Rivers Crisis, Orders Suspension of Impeachment Proceedings Against Fubara

President Bola Tinubu has intervened decisively to resolve the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, affirming Nyesom Wike as the undisputed political leader of the state while casting doubts over Siminalayi Fubara’s re-election prospects in upcoming elections.

The intervention comes after months of escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and his former mentor, Wike, which threatened both governance and political stability in Rivers State. The feud saw pro-Wike legislators initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, raising fears of a complete breakdown in state government operations.

According to sources familiar with the mediation, President Tinubu:

  • Suspended all impeachment proceedings against Fubara to prevent further political instability in Rivers State.
  • Officially recognised Wike as the dominant political leader in Rivers State, solidifying his influence across party lines, including both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
  • Directed that candidates loyal to Wike be endorsed for the upcoming Rivers State House of Assembly by-elections, reinforcing his control over the state legislature.

The crisis initially escalated following a six-month emergency rule in March 2025, which temporarily restricted Fubara’s political autonomy. Despite the end of the emergency, rival factions reignited the feud, pushing the Rivers State political landscape toward instability until Tinubu’s intervention.

Political analysts say that with Wike now confirmed as the leading figure in Rivers politics, Fubara’s ability to assert independent authority and secure re-election in 2027 is significantly weakened. Observers note that while Fubara remains governor, his political base is now constrained under Wike’s oversight.

The president’s action has restored a measure of political stability in Rivers State, though it highlights how personalised politics and party dynamics continue to shape governance in Nigeria. With Wike at the helm of party and legislative influence, Rivers politics is poised for a realignment ahead of the next electoral cycle.

This latest development underscores the ongoing influence of Tinubu in mediating state-level political crises and ensuring the consolidation of party hierarchies, even as elections and re-election ambitions loom in Rivers State.
