Morocco Captain Rejects Title, Backs Senegal After AFCON Final Defeat
Captain of the Morocco national football team, Achraf Hakimi, has firmly rejected any suggestion that his side should be awarded the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 title following their defeat, insisting that Senegal national football team are the rightful champions.
Hakimi, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, made his position clear after Morocco’s loss to Senegal in the tournament’s final, stressing that the Atlas Lions did not merit the trophy based on the outcome of the match.
According to the defender, accepting the title under any circumstances—particularly if influenced by administrative decisions from the Confederation of African Football—would go against the principles of fairness and integrity in football.
“We did not deserve the trophy,” Hakimi was quoted as saying, adding that the result on the pitch must be respected. He emphasized that both he and his teammates would refuse to accept the title if it were handed to them despite their defeat.
The remarks come amid speculation over potential off-field decisions regarding the final, although CAF has yet to issue any official statement indicating a review or reversal of the result.
Senegal’s victory has been widely celebrated across the continent, with the Teranga Lions earning praise for their disciplined performance and consistency throughout the competition. Their triumph further cements their status as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
Hakimi’s comments have since drawn attention across the football community, with many observers viewing his stance as a demonstration of sportsmanship and respect for the spirit of the game.
As discussions continue, stakeholders await any formal communication from CAF, which remains the ultimate authority on decisions relating to the tournament.
