Morocco Knock Out Nigeria on Penalties to Reach AFCON Final as Senegal Await Hosts

Rabat, Morocco — Morocco defeated Nigeria on penalties to secure a place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, ending the Super Eagles’ campaign after a tense semi-final encounter that finished goalless after extra time.

Playing in front of a vociferous home crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the Atlas Lions of Morocco held their nerve to win the shootout 4–2, following 120 minutes of tactical football that produced few clear-cut chances. Both sides were solid defensively, with Nigeria matching the hosts for long spells despite Morocco enjoying greater possession.

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero of the night, saving two Nigerian spot kicks to tilt the shootout decisively in favour of the hosts. The victory sends Morocco into their first AFCON final in over two decades, where they will face Senegal, who edged Egypt in the second semi-final.

For Nigeria, the defeat marked a painful end to an otherwise impressive AFCON 2025 campaign. The Super Eagles had shown resilience and attacking quality in earlier rounds, including a statement victory over Algeria, but struggled to break down Morocco’s disciplined backline when it mattered most.

Despite the loss, Nigeria will still contest the third-place playoff, while attention now shifts to the final showdown as Morocco chase a historic continental title on home soil. Senegal, meanwhile, will be aiming to deny the hosts and lift another AFCON crown.

The AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal is expected to draw massive continental attention, with both teams boasting strong squads and recent international pedigree.
