Much Ado About Hijab – Reno Omokri
One irony of life I observed in my travels in the Middle East is how Muslim Middle Eastern and Asian women cover their natural hair in hijabs. I contrast this with how our women in Black Africa buy allegedly Brazilian hair (which is really South East Asian hair sacrificed at various Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist temples) to adorn their heads.
I have been to so many Islamic countries, and you can hardly see women’s hair.
Sadly, the mainstream media portrays this as part of the subjugation of women in Islam.
The funny thing is that in terms of women empowerment, Muslim women are by far more politically empowered than women in any other society.
The largest Muslim nation in the world, Indonesia, was governed by a woman as President, Megawati Sukarnoputri. The second largest Muslim nation on Earth was twice governed by a woman, Benazir Bhutto.
Following on, the fourth largest Islamic nation on the planet, Bangladesh, was twice presided over by females, including Begum Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina. And the largest Muslim country in Europe, Turkey, was governed by a woman, Tansu Çiller.

The incumbent President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, is a woman.
All these politically powerful women, and many other Muslim females who have governed nations like Singapore (Halimah Yacob), cover their hair.
In contrast, how many women have governed the largest Christian nations on Earth? Empowerment is not by fashion or hairstyle!
And it is a fact that in Islam, women’s inheritance rights are guaranteed. For example, in a survey by StatiSense, the Northwest of Nigeria had the highest level of female inheritance rights. Note that Nigeria’s Northwest has the highest percentage of Muslims of any zone. Conversely, the Southeast of Nigeria experienced the least female inheritance rights. And that region is the most religiously homogeneous in Nigeria. Almost 95% Christian.
Please fact-check me. There is $10,000 in Naira equivalent if you can fault the above data.
A hijab does not mean disempowerment. It is not even limited to Islam. Before Islam and to this very day, Orthodox Christian women have been using hair coverings. Yesterday and today and every day, my wife and daughter wear netela to church.
To show you how unbalanced life is, Middle Eastern and Asian Muslim women who have long, flowing hair cover it. But many women who do not have this feature waste so much money buying it to flaunt it.
What an irony!
