Neighbour dies as woman trying to kill cockroach sets apartment on fire

A woman in her 20s from Osan, South Korea, is facing criminal charges following a tragic apartment fire that claimed the life of a neighbor and injured several others. Authorities say the blaze began around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, October 20, when the woman attempted to kill a cockroach using a lighter and flammable spray, inadvertently igniting her residence.

The fire quickly engulfed the building, forcing panicked residents to escape through windows. Among the victims was a Chinese woman in her 30s who had recently given birth. She died after falling from a fifth-floor window while trying to flee the smoke. Her husband survived by leaping to a neighboring building, having first passed their infant to a neighbor for safety.

Eight additional residents sustained minor injuries due to smoke inhalation. Police described the suspect as “a flight risk” and confirmed she faces charges of accidental arson and causing death by negligence. Investigators revealed that the woman admitted to using the same improvised method to eliminate insects on previous occasions.

The case remains under investigation and will be handed over to prosecutors upon completion. The incident has sparked renewed concerns over fire safety and the dangers of using household items inappropriately.
