New Year Tragedy: Seven Feared Dead in Plateau Community Attack
Residents of Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, were thrown into mourning after suspected Fulani militia bandits launched a deadly attack on the community on New Year’s Eve, killing seven people.
The tragic incident was confirmed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, who said several other residents are still missing, raising fears that the death toll may increase.
In a statement titled “Another Killing Marred New Year Celebration in Plateau State”, Tengwong said the attack further highlights the worsening insecurity in Plateau State, particularly in rural communities.

“While the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum community were plunged into mourning following a deadly attack by suspected armed Fulani militants,” the statement said.
According to the BYM, the attack occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on December 31, 2025, just minutes before the transition into 2026, as residents were preparing to celebrate the New Year.
“As at the time of filing this report, seven corpses have been recovered, while search and rescue operations are ongoing, with fears that the casualty figure may rise,” Tengwong stated.
He noted that the attack came despite prior security alerts warning that several communities in Jos South LGA were being targeted for possible attacks.
“Sadly, Bum community has now fallen victim to this renewed wave of violence against innocent rural dwellers,” the statement added.
The Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM) said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as developments unfold, while calling for urgent action to protect lives and property in the area.
