New Year’s Eve Explosion Kills Several at Swiss Crans-Montana Ski Resort Bar

Several people were killed and dozens injured early New Year’s Day after a powerful explosion ripped through a crowded bar at the luxury Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland, authorities have confirmed.

According to BBC reports, the blast occurred at about 1:30 a.m. local time at Le Constellation bar in the Valais region, a popular nightlife spot frequented by international tourists celebrating the New Year.

Police said more than 100 people were inside the venue when the explosion triggered a fire, prompting a major emergency response. A spokesperson for the Valais Cantonal Police confirmed “several fatalities and several injured,” adding that an exact death toll could not yet be released as rescue operations and victim identification were still ongoing.

Emergency services, including police officers, firefighters, ambulances and air rescue teams, were deployed in large numbers to the scene. The area surrounding the bar has been cordoned off, while authorities imposed a temporary no-fly zone over Crans-Montana to allow uninterrupted rescue efforts.

Images and videos circulating on social media, and cited by Swiss media, showed flames engulfing part of the building as emergency vehicles crowded nearby streets.

Investigators said the cause of the explosion remains unknown. While some local reports speculated about fireworks or pyrotechnics, police stressed that no official confirmation has been made.

Authorities have established a helpline for relatives and friends seeking information about those affected. A press briefing by police and regional prosecutors is expected later as investigations continue.

Crans-Montana, located in southwestern Switzerland, is one of the country’s most exclusive ski resorts and is scheduled to host an international speed skiing World Cup event later this month.
