New York Police Investigate Car Crash Into Synagogue as Possible Hate Crime
New York, USA — January 29, 2026: New York City authorities are investigating an incident at a Brooklyn synagogue as a potential hate crime after a driver rammed his car into the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters, a prominent Jewish house of worship and community centre, in the Crown Heights neighbourhood late Wednesday evening. The NYPD responded to reports around 8:45 p.m. at 770 Eastern Parkway, a location revered in the global Jewish community, after officers on a routine detail heard a disturbance near the building’s entrance. Video from the scene shows a gray vehicle repeatedly striking doors of the headquarters, then backing up and driving into them again, before police moved in and took the driver into custody. (CBS News)
Authorities say no injuries were reported in the incident, and a bomb squad sweep found no explosives or other dangerous devices in the vehicle. The driver has not been publicly identified and remains in police custody while investigators work to determine the cause and motive. (ABC News)

Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the crash as “horrifying and deeply alarming,” emphasising the historical and cultural importance of the synagogue and urging that acts of intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers be taken seriously. NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department’s Hate Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation, noting it is too early to conclude whether bias motivated the act. A representative for the Chabad movement confirmed that parts of the building’s doors were damaged and that the complex was evacuated as a precaution. (CBS News)
The Chabad Lubavitch headquarters — often referred to simply as “770” after its Eastern Parkway address — is a historic centre for the Hasidic Jewish movement and draws thousands of visitors from around the world. Officials responded by increasing security at houses of worship across New York City “out of an abundance of caution.” (CBS News)
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the incident “disturbing and unacceptable,” stressing that it could have been far more serious and affirming that his office is working closely with NYPD investigators to ensure justice and community safety. (https://www.whsv.com)
While investigators have not confirmed whether the crash was intentionally bias‑motivated, the scene has sparked widespread concern amid a reported rise in antisemitic and other bias‑based attacks in the United States in recent years. Rights advocates have linked increased hostility toward Jewish and Muslim communities to global geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza. (Investing.com)
