FIFA, CAF suspend NFF election as Nigeria football reforms face fresh review

NFF debunks ‘fake’ FIFA letter as Dikko-led delegation meets Infantino

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed as fake a purported FIFA letter seeking clarification over alleged government interference in the affairs of the federation.

The NFF made the clarification on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as a high-level Nigerian delegation met FIFA President Gianni Infantino at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, amid ongoing efforts to reform the administration of Nigerian football.

In a statement, the NFF said the document circulating in sections of the media did not originate from the world football governing body.

“The NFF has debunked news of a ‘letter’ circulating in sections of the media as being from world football governing body, FIFA. It is totally fake. FIFA has already accepted the resignations of former principal officers and Members of the NFF Exco,” the federation said.

The NFF’s statement effectively rejected reports suggesting that FIFA had formally demanded an explanation from Nigeria over the circumstances surrounding the recent changes in the federation’s leadership.

The clarification came as officials from Nigeria held talks with Infantino and other senior FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) representatives on the ongoing restructuring of Nigerian football.

The Nigerian delegation was led by National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko and included NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade and NFF Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme.

Former NFF President and ex-FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick also attended the meeting. The engagement included discussions on the proposed reform process and the need to establish a stable and effective framework for the future administration of Nigerian football.

The meeting followed the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the NFF Executive Committee on August 27.

The mass resignations came amid growing concerns over the administration and performance of Nigerian football, with the country facing significant setbacks involving its senior men’s and women’s national teams.

Following the resignations, the NFF appointed Emmanuel Ikpeme as interim General Secretary and Ademola Olajire as interim Deputy General Secretary to oversee the federation’s administrative activities during the transition.

The NFF also suspended preparations for its planned September 27 elective congress as consultations over the proposed restructuring continue.

The leadership crisis followed calls by President Bola Tinubu for comprehensive reforms in Nigerian football after a series of disappointing results and concerns over the governance of the sport.

Tinubu directed the National Sports Commission to work with football stakeholders to develop reforms covering areas including football governance, administration, stakeholder representation, player development, domestic competitions and accountability.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has further intensified criticism of the country’s football administration. The Super Falcons have also faced a major setback after failing to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Against this backdrop, the Federal Government has sought greater cooperation among the country’s football authorities and international governing bodies to develop a sustainable framework for reform.

The purported FIFA letter, which circulated online and in sections of the Nigerian media, reportedly raised questions over Gusau’s resignation and alleged government involvement in the leadership changes.

The document was also said to have warned that interference in the independence of a national football association could amount to a breach of FIFA regulations, potentially exposing Nigeria to sanctions.

However, the NFF has firmly rejected the document, insisting that it was fabricated and did not come from FIFA.

The federation further stated that FIFA had already accepted the resignations of the former NFF principal officers and Executive Committee members.

Rather than a confrontation between FIFA and the Nigerian authorities, the latest engagement in Zurich indicates that discussions are ongoing between FIFA, CAF, the NSC and the NFF administration on how to implement the proposed reforms.

The NFF said the objective of the discussions is to develop a comprehensive reform roadmap that complies with the statutes and regulations of FIFA and CAF while addressing the challenges facing Nigerian football.

The outcome of the engagement is expected to influence the structure and timing of the next NFF leadership election, as well as broader changes to the administration of football in the country.

With the reform process now involving direct engagement with FIFA and CAF, attention will be focused on whether the stakeholders can reach an agreement that provides stability, strengthens football governance and improves the development and performance of Nigeria’s national teams.

The latest development also puts the focus on the need for a transparent transition that protects the independence of football administration while ensuring that Nigerian football receives the institutional reforms required to compete effectively at continental and global levels.

Real Madrid Demand Tebas’ Exit After Explosive Nazi Propaganda Row

Real Madrid have demanded the immediate resignation of Javier Tebas as president of LaLiga and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), escalating their dispute with the Spanish football chief over comments comparing the club’s communication methods to Nazi-era propaganda techniques.

The Spanish giants issued a strongly worded statement on Friday, October 16, describing Tebas’ remarks as offensive, unacceptable and incompatible with the responsibilities of his positions in Spanish football.

The latest confrontation followed comments by Tebas in which he compared the methods employed by Real Madrid’s management and its television channel, Real Madrid TV, to propaganda techniques associated with Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister under Nazi Germany.

Tebas argued that he was comparing communication methods rather than endorsing or referring to Nazi ideology. However, Real Madrid rejected the explanation, insisting that the comparison remained deeply offensive and inappropriate for someone occupying senior positions in the sport.

The club accused Tebas of repeatedly attacking its leadership, president Florentino Pérez and its media outlets, arguing that his public statements demonstrated a lack of neutrality, respect and impartiality.

Real Madrid also objected to what it described as attempts to attribute the actions and opinions of third parties to the club, insisting that it should not be held responsible for statements made by journalists or other individuals.

READ ALSO:

The dispute has also drawn attention to the long-running controversy surrounding the Negreira case, which concerns payments made by FC Barcelona to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, a former vice-president of Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees.

Real Madrid said it had approached UEFA to seek clarification over the payments and called for measures to protect the integrity of football competitions. The payments have been the subject of legal scrutiny, but allegations of improper influence over refereeing must be distinguished from any conduct established by a court.

The club further called for a comprehensive overhaul of Spain’s refereeing system and football governance structures, including changes involving officials who held positions of responsibility during the period under scrutiny.

In its statement, Real Madrid argued that Tebas should focus on promoting transparency and addressing concerns about football governance rather than directing criticism at the club.

The club maintained that his repeated public attacks had undermined confidence in his ability to lead LaLiga impartially and serve the interests of all its member clubs.

The demand marks another escalation in the strained relationship between Real Madrid and Tebas, who has led LaLiga since 2013. The two sides have repeatedly clashed over refereeing, the league’s administration, broadcasting rights and the future direction of Spanish football.

Real Madrid had also called for Tebas to leave his position in September after he criticised the club’s complaints about refereeing following its 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the city derby.

On that occasion, Tebas dismissed claims of systematic refereeing bias against Real Madrid, while the club accused him of using his institutional position to discredit its concerns.

The latest dispute has broadened the disagreement beyond match officiating to include the conduct expected of football administrators and the standards of public communication in the sport.

Real Madrid said Tebas’ statements and conduct disqualified him from continuing in his current positions and formally demanded his immediate resignation as both LaLiga president and RFEF vice-president.

The demand does not automatically remove Tebas from either role, and no resignation was announced in the club’s statement.

The confrontation leaves relations between the Spanish football authorities and one of the country’s most prominent clubs under renewed strain, with the debate over neutrality, refereeing transparency and institutional accountability likely to continue.

Yamal Inspires Barcelona Comeback to Sink Osimhen’s Galatasaray

Barcelona delivered a stunning second-half performance to defeat Victor Osimhen’s Galatasaray 4-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, October 13, 2026, recovering from an early setback to silence the home crowd in Istanbul.

The Spanish giants fell behind in the first half but responded with four goals to secure an emphatic victory at RAMS Park, extending their winning run across all competitions to 10 matches.

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen played the full 90 minutes for Galatasaray but failed to score as Barcelona overturned the deficit with an impressive attacking display led by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Galatasaray took the lead in the 28th minute when Aleksey Batrakov finished off a counterattack initiated by Rafael Leão. His effort took a deflection off João Cancelo before beating Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García.

The Turkish champions appeared poised to extend their advantage when Osimhen threatened from a corner, but a subsequent goal was ruled out for offside following a video assistant referee review.

Barcelona capitalised on the reprieve and restored parity shortly before half-time. In the 43rd minute, Cancelo collected a pass from Dani Olmo inside the penalty area and curled a superb finish into the far corner.

The equaliser transformed the contest, and Barcelona returned from the break with renewed intensity.

In the 50th minute, Yamal delivered an excellent cross that Fermín López headed into the net to put the visitors ahead for the first time.

Just three minutes later, Yamal produced another decisive contribution, creating the opportunity for Anthony Gordon to score Barcelona’s third goal and put the visitors firmly in control.

Gordon, who was making his first Champions League start for Barcelona, recovered from an earlier missed opportunity to find the net and extend the lead.

Barcelona completed the scoring in the 65th minute when substitute Karim Adeyemi fired home after coming off the bench, putting the result beyond Galatasaray’s reach.

Yamal’s two assists proved crucial to the comeback, with the young winger repeatedly exposing the home side’s defence after the interval. His performance earned him the Man of the Match recognition in Flashscore’s report of the encounter.

Osimhen, meanwhile, endured a frustrating evening as Galatasaray struggled to respond to Barcelona’s attacking pressure. The Nigerian forward had opportunities to threaten the visitors but could not find the breakthrough needed to revive his team’s hopes.

The defeat leaves Galatasaray without a point after their opening two matches in the Champions League league phase, increasing the pressure on the Turkish side ahead of their next European fixture.

Barcelona, by contrast, have collected six points from their first two matches after opening their campaign with a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord.

The result strengthens the Spanish club’s position in the early Champions League standings and provides another indication of their attacking strength under manager Hansi Flick.

Barcelona will next face Paris Saint-Germain in a potentially decisive European test, while Galatasaray are scheduled to visit Lille on October 21 as they seek to recover from their difficult start.

For Osimhen and his teammates, the immediate challenge will be to address their defensive shortcomings and regain momentum before their next European outing.

Ronaldo Hits 980th Career Goal as Al-Nassr Win After Portugal Fallout

Cristiano Ronaldo has moved closer to the historic 1,000-goal milestone after scoring for Al-Nassr in their 3-0 victory over Al-Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League, following a controversial fallout with Portugal’s national team coach, Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old Portuguese forward scored his 980th career goal on Friday, October 9, 2026, as Al-Nassr returned to domestic action with a convincing victory in Riyadh.

Ronaldo’s goal came midway through the first half when Al-Diriyah goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah parried a long-range effort from Kingsley Coman. Ronaldo reacted quickly to the rebound and finished from close range to give Al-Nassr the lead.

The goal brought the five-time Ballon d’Or winner 20 goals away from his publicly stated target of scoring 1,000 goals in official matches, further extending a remarkable career spanning club and international football.

Al-Nassr doubled their advantage shortly before half-time when Samu Costa headed home from a corner delivered by João Félix. Coman subsequently added the third goal with 13 minutes remaining to seal the 3-0 victory.

The result kept Al-Nassr level on points with Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Qadsiah after eight rounds, although they remained behind on goal difference. Al-Qadsiah had earlier strengthened their position with a 5-0 victory over Al-Kholood.

Ronaldo also received support from Al-Nassr supporters, who displayed banners celebrating his achievements before the match. The Portuguese Football Federation’s acknowledgement of his goal on social media also attracted attention against the backdrop of the recent controversy surrounding his national team involvement.

The club performance offered a positive response from Ronaldo after an international break dominated by reports of a disagreement with Jesus over his role in Portugal’s squad.

The dispute followed Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway, during which Ronaldo was not introduced despite warming up. He was subsequently informed that he would not start against Denmark.

In a statement reported by Reuters on October 6, Ronaldo alleged that Jesus had broken his word on two occasions. According to the forward, they had initially agreed that he would miss the two matches to manage his fitness, but the coach later indicated that he would play for 30 minutes against Norway.

Ronaldo said a subsequent meeting involving Jesus and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho produced an understanding about how the coach would explain the situation publicly. He alleged that Jesus failed to follow the agreed explanation.

Jesus disputed Ronaldo’s account, denying that such an agreement had been made.

Ronaldo later apologised for leaving Portugal’s training camp and for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match. He also accepted that the Portuguese Football Federation could impose disciplinary measures over his conduct.

Despite the disagreement, Ronaldo insisted that he had not retired from international football and remained willing to represent Portugal after serving any punishment that might be imposed.

Portugal’s coach and federation president Pedro Proença have indicated that the forward remains welcome in the national team setup. The federation has also described the episode as a misunderstanding to be resolved internally.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, with 146 goals in 234 international appearances. His next steps with the national team will depend on the resolution of the dispute and any disciplinary decision by the federation.

For now, his return to club action has put the focus back on his scoring record and Al-Nassr’s league campaign. With 980 career goals, Ronaldo continues his pursuit of the 1,000-goal landmark while uncertainty remains over the timing of his next Portugal appearance.
