Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0, top Group A again

Nigeria’s Super Eagles returned to the winning ways on Monday as they beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0, at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The team now tops the Group A table with nine points, followed by Guinea-Bissau with seven points.

Moses Simon scored from the penalty spot in the 30th minute to hand Nigeria the maximum points in the qualifiers.

Simon sent the goalkeeper in the wrong direction, after a penalty was awarded to Nigeria for bad tackle on MBright Osayi-Samuel.

It could have been more, but big misses by Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi and Victor Osimhen left the opponent’s coach heaving a huge sigh of relief at the end of the game.

The Super Eagles had lost by a similar margin in the reverse fixture at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on Friday.

Monday’s result ended Nigeria’s four-game losing streak and could ease the pressure on Jose Peseiro, whose tenure as Super Eagles coach has received heavy criticisms.

Nigeria will next in the qualifiers play away against Sierra Leone on June 12.

Sierra Leone occupy third place with five points, while Sao Tome and Principe have just one point.

US winger Christian Pulisic grabbed the equaliser with 10 minutes to go with English forward Abraham sealing the winner after 93 minutes to give his side the trophy for the eighth time and first since 2016.
