Nigerian Army Overruns Bandits’ Camp, Neutralises Scores in Zamfara

The Nigerian Army has killed scores of bandits in a decisive raid on the stronghold of notorious gang leader Gwaska Dan Karmi in Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, military authorities have confirmed.

The operation was carried out by troops of 8 Division Nigerian Army under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, following intelligence reports that over 100 armed bandits had gathered at the camp to plan attacks on local communities and military supply routes.

According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army, the air-ground assault on January 31, 2026, was executed after several days of surveillance. Ground troops, backed by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), launched a surprise offensive, encountering heavy resistance as the bandits attempted to flank and encircle the troops.

“The bandits were overwhelmed by superior firepower in a fierce firefight. Many were neutralised, while others fled with gunshot injuries. The camp was later set ablaze before our troops withdrew,” the Army said.

Efforts are ongoing to prevent fleeing bandits from regrouping. “NAF units are conducting interdiction missions, while ground troops maintain dominance over the area,” the statement added.

The Army also confirmed casualties on its side, noting that some soldiers paid the supreme price, and one combat enabler vehicle was hit by a Rocket Propelled Grenade, catching fire.

Lieutenant Colonel Osoba stressed that the Nigerian Army honours the fallen soldiers and remains resolute in its mission to dismantle bandit networks and disrupt their operations across the North-West. “Combat efficiency remains high, and operations to secure affected communities continue,” he said.

The raid marks another significant military victory against banditry in Zamfara State, reflecting the Army’s commitment to restoring security and protecting citizens in the region.
