NISO Reveals Real Cause of Friday’s National Grid Collapse

Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Friday, January 23, 2026, causing a nationwide blackout that affected major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Benin, Osogbo, and Onitsha. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has explained that the outage resulted from the simultaneous tripping of multiple high-voltage transmission lines and the disconnection of several power generation units, which triggered a total system-wide failure.

According to NISO, the blackout began around 12:40 p.m., when electricity generation fell to zero megawatts (MW), effectively halting the interconnected transmission network and cutting power to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos). This marks the first total grid collapse of 2026.

Immediate Response and Power Restoration

System restoration efforts commenced around 1:15 p.m., following established emergency protocols. Power has gradually been restored to major cities, with engineers working to fully stabilise the grid and prevent further disruptions. NISO said a detailed investigation is ongoing to determine the root and contributing causes of the failure.
