NMA Calls Emergency Meeting as Gunmen Kill Enugu Psychiatrist After Kidnap Ordeal
A consultant neuro-psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Enugu, Dr. Andrew Orovwigho, has died after being abducted and shot by unknown gunmen, reigniting concerns over the security of medical professionals in Nigeria.
Reports indicate that Dr. Orovwigho was kidnapped on December 30, 2025, in front of his residence in Enugu, during which he was allegedly shot. He was later released by his abductors on January 1, 2026, but tragedy struck again when he was reportedly attacked a second time shortly after regaining his freedom.
According to sources, the doctor was shot again and abandoned by the roadside. A good Samaritan reportedly found him and rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries on January 2, 2026.

Colleagues described Dr. Orovwigho as a dedicated mental health specialist who devoted his career to caring for vulnerable patients. His death has sent shockwaves through the medical community in Enugu and across Nigeria, coming amid rising cases of kidnapping and violent crime in Enugu State.
The incident was confirmed by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State chapter, Dr. Sunny Ken Okafor, who said an emergency meeting of doctors has been scheduled for next Wednesday to address the worsening security situation.
While details surrounding the attacks remain unclear, healthcare workers have expressed growing fear over what they describe as an increasingly dangerous work environment.
“Doctors and nurses are now endangered species. This is frightening and unacceptable,” a medical professional lamented.
As of Friday, the management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu, had yet to issue an official statement. Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, patients, and professional bodies, many describing Dr. Orovwigho’s death as a devastating and preventable loss.
