Nnamdi Kanu: DSS DG summoned over contempt of court
A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a notice of summons to the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, for an alleged contempt involving the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
In a judicial process issued by the registrar of the court dated October 24, 2024, the court asked the DG to appear before it and show cause why he should not be committed to prison for alleged contempt of court.
The notice reads, “And take further notice that you are hereby required to attend the court on the first mentioned day to show cause why an order for your committal should not be made.”
The court referred to the DSS’ non-compliance with the order of court directing it to allow a three-day visitation for Kanu’s lawyers every week at the DSS facility in Abuja to enable him prepare for his defence.
The court noted that despite the orders of Justice Binta Nyako on record, the lawyers led by Aloy Ejimakor Esq were on October 22 turned back by operatives on the instruction of the DG.
The latest order was served on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) and the prosecution counsel for the federal government, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).
Kanu, who is facing a seven-count charge bordering on treasonable felony, had on September 24 asked the presiding judge of a Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, to recuse herself from the matter.
