Nnamdi Kanu Issues Fresh Directives From Sokoto Prison, Warns IPOB Against Internal Attacks
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has issued new directives to his supporters from Sokoto Correctional Centre, cautioning against internal attacks, unauthorised statements, and divisions within the movement. The jailed secessionist leader emphasised that all communications must go through official IPOB channels to maintain unity and discipline.
Kanu, currently serving a life sentence for terrorism-related offences, instructed followers to respect the Directorate of State (DOS) — a key IPOB structure he created — and warned that any attacks on members of the DOS, affiliated groups, or his family would be treated as a direct challenge to his authority. He also dismissed claims of extortion during prison visits, stressing that access is strictly governed by the facility’s official protocols.

His legal representatives conveyed these directives after a visitation, highlighting Kanu’s concern over recent public statements and actions that he believes undermine the movement’s cohesion. Supporters were urged to avoid unauthorised broadcasts or media statements and to adhere strictly to Kanu’s leadership instructions.
Kanu’s situation has remained a focal point in Nigeria’s political and security discourse, especially following his transfer to Sokoto Prison in November 2025, far from Abuja where his legal team and family are based. His wife, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, criticised his lawyers for not briefing her before the transfer, underscoring tensions around communication and representation. (saharareporters.com)
Legal developments have also shaped the narrative, including the Court of Appeal striking out his rights violation suit and a Federal High Court rejecting his request to move closer to Abuja, highlighting ongoing judicial and custodial controversies surrounding Kanu’s detention. (thisdaylive.com)
